Since we're fucking the corpse of this necro'd thread I might as well leave my two cents. 6 hours of shop labor sounds like a deal to me. It's nowhere close to as easy as a transmission pan as has been implied in this thread. Pulling everything to drop the front diff (don't forget that this includes removing the CVs), removing it, and installing it sucks, especially if you don't have a shop lift.

the best thing to happen is to replace ALL that other stuff that comes out all at once for 6hrs combined

one bird one stone something like that, ya

Replaced approximately 20% of original steel with rust by driving on the beach and launching boats in saltwater as often as possible.
You've almost got me convinced to just trust a mechanic to do it. Almost.

Oh 100% do it yourself, but it's not an afternoon of tinkering in the garage with a few wrenches, or a newbie type job like some people earlier in this thread suggested.

Considering they either need to take the diff or engine out thats really low

It took 16 year old me 3 days to do it granted it was my first time doing everything i did

Hoping I can get the oil pan out without the need to completely remove the front diff like in the video; hopefully just dislodging it and shifting it out of the way will create enough space. Otherwise I guess I should be thinking about what I want it to say on my tombstone as well.

I really don't remember doing all this to pull my 3rz oil pan. It was a long time ago, but I don't think I pulled the diff. I seem to recall only one way it would come out and it was like doing a Cracker Barrel puzzle blind folded to find that one spot. And when you do find it you better practice it several times before adding any gasket maker to keep it fresh in your mind.

Since we are definitely fucking the corpse of this nercro'd thread, figured I'd drop this in here. Didn't look into the guide, but I'm 99% sure you're going to have to drop the whole front axle to remove the pan like you're saying.

Please answer this question - non of the profiles on the left say what Tacoma you guys are own or where you live so when one of you says you have to remove the front diff and it's 6 hours and another says you don't have to remove it and it's 1 1/4 hours what are we talking about - sounds like different models different years different engines etc to me. I have a 2008 4 wheel drive stick - what method would work for me if some one has a similar truck ?? I have a Haynes Repair Manual and it says you have to remove the front diff. I live in North Jersey so if some one says he can do it in his sleep and lives near by he is welcome to it - I'll supply a hand - beer and $$. Thanks for any reply.

Being in the 1st Gen section it's a 1995-2004. Being on TacomaWorld makes it a Tacoma.

Original posts states it is for a 2.7L, which makes it a 3rz. Since people are saying to drop the diff then that makes it a 4wd. So...1995-2004 4wd 3rz Tacoma. Looking at your mod sig list this repair is out of your league.

It probably would have come out and went back in easier if you dropped the diff :D

2.7l 4x4 2000, blew one spark plug thread on my head valves. Figured I’d change my timing chain while I had the heads off. so I’m here after attempting to take off the timing chain faceplate, which can’t be removed without taking off the bolts on the oil fill tube, which is in the oil pan, which can’t be removed without either removing the entire driveline/transmission to get the back bolts off because they are in the transmission bellhousing. And / or I have to drop it entirely in order to properly reseal it I need to remove both front wheels, cv axles and drop the differential, which might include steering rack and sway bar, wtf mate

man I’ve changed the pulley tensioner on my power steering pump I’m not ready for this. Why would they make it such a nightmare to work on.

Engineers don’t have to do any work on anything they design and probably never picked up a wrench maybe don’t know which end of a screwdriver to hold- that’s my opinion and I’m sticking to it
