I washed my 2007 Tacoma access cab 4x4 today, and when I went to wipe down the roof, I noticed a 6 inch crack. It is cracked all the way thru the material. I have never seen anything like this before. There are a couple of other cracks appearing but have not split through the material.
Has anyone ever had this problem? Is this fixable? Any idea what would cause this to happen? I am not a happy camper right at the moment.
    Any insight would be appreciated.
No it is not metal. It is more like fiberglass. [IMG] [IMG]

they need to kick it to old skool and not come up with different materials for body work "/ there just making cheaper to make things and selling it at the same price, and calling it high quality

Added extra awesomeness to its original awesomeness.
Definitely an after market repair, your roof is supposed to be metal. As others have asked, is just the paint cracking? Has it had Bondi repair on the roof?

    They aren't.

I don't know where the "fiberglass" on her roof came from, but it did not come from the Toyota factory.

Magnetic antennae stick to that roof just fine. The only composites in the 2nd Gen Tacoma bodywork is the bed liner.

As others have said, the factory roof is steel. Sounds like someone used some body filler to repair a dent and something went wrong.

Fixable? Of course, by a professional body shop. If the dent was popped out enough, only a thin coat of filler would be needed, and if done properly, that should be okay. Of course, I'm not a body guy, but I have put a thin coat of filler over a mostly popped out dent before, painted it, and had no problems. The best way would be to replace the roof panel, which would be a lot of time ($), but shouldn't be too complicated for a professional shop to do.

Good luck. That's a real buzz killer right there.

Interesting! I bought this truck about 9 months ago. I did see the carfax and it showed an accident shortly after it was purchased new, but that is the only accident reported, and also, the title is clean. I will take it to a
body shop to see what they can do to repair it. Thanks for all of your input, I would not have thought it was an aftermarket repair. Makes sense.
There are other little cracks showing also, it will be interesting to see what the body shop says. Let the buyer beware, I guess.

For a roof to be damaged in a collision (and show up on Carfax), it would usually have to be a rollover. More likely the damage was caused by falling objects (or hail) or low overhead clearance (e.g. sprinkler in low parking garage).

Maybe it's the camera angle, but I don't see the same four "ribs" running front to back, stamped into the sheetmetal, that I have on my truck. Was the second pic taken standing in the bed? Or was it taken from the side? Starting to wonder now if someone tried to cover the whole roof with some other type of material.

Definitely a repair that is failing!
Have the shop you take it to inspect the rest of the truck for repaired areas as well.

Not all states required a title be branded salvage back in 2007 when a vehicle was totaled.
