    For 2016+ Tacomas, Toyota recommends no higher than 5th gear for optimal battery charging and engine braking. 5th has better torque and keeps your RPMs higher and let's your water pump turn faster for better engine cooling too. I imagine 2nd gens are the same since they have similar final drive ratios as on the 3rd gens.
