I always thought the shifter had to be lifted slightly to get it into reverse, but I've found that I actually don't have to. I can just push it over and up. Have I been making this too difficult or what? :pout:

Never lifted it. Always just slide it right over. Obviously there is a little resistance but never had an issue.

Some transmissions (not ours) require you lift a portion of the shifter to allow it to go into the reverse gate. Maybe that's why you were thinking that?

Shit if I know. I had a 2007 for a few years and always lifted that one, too. I guess I didn't have to! If it doesn't have to be lifted, I wonder why it actually goes up a little when lifted.

Is it common to lift the whole knob to go into reverse with other brands? I know with some brands you have to lift a collar at the base of the shift knob.

Yeah, some you have to lift up, some you have to push down, and like you said, some have a collar to lift. LOL, I guess the Tacoma is none of the above! ;)

I have never seen one that lifted up, many were push down or ones that had a collar to lift.
