Getting ready to install a new TRD short shifter in Sons truck.
138k miles and no idea if fluid was ever changed. So thinking of doing and drain n fill.

I heard you can actually fill from the shifter area, so it’s easy to do both in this case.

what’s the best fluid for this job? Should I drop pan and change filter?

if done a drain and fill on my Tundra AT, with the standpipe, and this just seems easier…..

just knocking out the preventatives item by item on his new to him Tacoma.

    thx

Redline MT-90 is what you want. Worth protecting those synchros on the 6 speeds.

Only reason for the short shifter is there is a ton of slop, and just replacing bushing, I’m sure the rubber inside shifter is shot. Don’t want to do that drill and fill technique…..so a new stick is needed regardless

Should I reconsider and go stock shifter?…

    thx

Nah just install the short shifter, your son will enjoy it. I have the TRD short shifter installed in my truck and I’m running Redline MT-90 gear oil also. I have a love hate relationship with the 2nd gen taco manual transmission, but at least it doesn’t feel like shifting a school bus now, in regards to shifter length throw. It still feels like a dump truck going into gear, very raw.

he wanted a manual, so have fun I told him….

And filling transmission, I think I read I can fill it through the shifter area when it’s off? Easier than the fill hole on the side.
    Is this correct…..

    thx

Yeah no problem. Just keep the fill plug out so you know when you're full

Easier maybe. Lazyier yes. Slower BY FAR. Technically It’s doable to fill through the shifter base, but the fluid passage hole into the trans is very small and the thick oil makes filling take significantly more time….but doable.

I installed a URD short shift kit at my last trans fluid swap (With Redline MT-90 like the others), and I still broke out a funnel to fill through the fill plug. Got tired waiting on the slower method (as you propose to do). Since you want to have the fill plug removed to verify your fluid level (great info @skigan) , again I didn’t see the value in waiting for the slow fill.

When I installed my TRD short shifter, I changed the fluid
    MT-90
    Filled thru the top
Loosened the fill plug tho so I could tell when I was at the right volume

I don't recall it taking too long :notsure:

Yup, mt-90. Just get under the truck and D/F through the correct holes. Its less work, and less chance of spilling stinky gear oil in the interior.

Just fill it through the fill plug. Unless you need to pull the shifter for some other reason, I am not sure how it would be easier through the shifter opening...its more work and completely unnecessary to pull the trim and remove shifter for a simple drain and fill. Plus you have to re-seal it.

Yes but if you are doing the shifter anyways . . .
I found it pretty easy to just fill from the top when I did my shifter
Was definitely careful not to spill

I filled mine through the top, and it took a long time for the oil to drain into the trans. I guess your results will vary.

This. Redline MT90 for the trans and transfer, Redline 75w90 for the diffs, every 30k. Life is good.
