There are 2WD versions, the RC60 and RC61, but they have a steep 4.784 1st gear.... which may or may not be useful in an X-Runner. The 4.06 reverse gear ratio is certainly useful for many. I'm not sure we can mix and match the gear set from the RC62F to keep the 3.98 1st.

This particular trans is only offered in the US as a 4wd version. There might be something from overseas that would work.

For an xrunner, the way I would drive it, I’d be looking at a T56 adaptation.

I think it's the gearing. Justin probably would have fixed this by now if it was possible in the ecu.

I think it is ecu related. Once the engine is allowed to make power it feels fine. It is strangely "I know that's not a word" dead below 2k. I don't think the ratios in the rc62 will help that or different diff gears. I do need to look into a hp-tuners so I can read and write for Justin to help.

We've chatted about his low RPM situation before. There's nothing in the tune that would specifically make that happen. Not at all saying it's not there, but it's nothing that is a product of the tuning. Something would have to be doing something that would make the ECU "react" versus "command"... If that makes sense. I'd love to see it via datalog.

Im still looking into something to data log. Will say third party app with a bluetooth dongle work for data logging for you?

Anything that will datalog the standard/generic PIDs for RPM, throttle position, accelerator position, fuel trims, ignition timing would be helpful.

ideally a MPVI2 logging my custom channels would give me the best picture, but I can at least start to understand what may be happening (and why) with a generic scan logging the things I mentioned.

The 2WD RC60J is used in the Hiace, which is sold in Mexico, which typically means the part would be loaded into the Toyota USA parts system, and it does appear that it is, 33030-26C30.

Not that it’s super helpful, being a cable-shift setup, but you could certainly swap the extension housing and shift lever for one from a Hilux, but it would come with the right length input shaft and bellhousing, which beats swapping those on a Hilux trans I think.

The RC60(F/J), RC61(F), and RC62F all use the same 1st gear, so unfortunately it wouldn’t be possible to mix and match to build a 2WD RC62 using the Toyota parts bin. You’d either need a custom output shaft with the RC62 reduction ratio gear on it, or you’d need a spline adaptor of some kind to allow using an RC62F output shaft with an RC60/61 extension housing.

And now I found a new trans swap to do. 30k so far on my RA swap. Now I may go RC if all goes well.

So, I typically like to make things reversible if I can. That’s what this floor modification is all about. I’ve only trimmed just enough off the rear of the hole to allow access to the shifter bolts. If, for whatever reason I end up going back to the RA transmission, the OE boot still completely covers the opening. The piece added to the front of the hole can be removed with a bit of focused heat. Hole plugs re-located, etc. I realize that this part of all this isn’t all that interesting to most. Apologies for that. But, it is a part of this swap. Anyone who does this will end up dealing with the floor. That being said:

    Here’s a few trinkets I used:

    Trinkets in place.

Reverse the lower bootie and top it with the upper boot in the original orientation. There’s a couple of staples and two rubber alignment nubs that need dealing with.

I used a unibit to open up the two odd shaped holes in the ring to the same diameter as the larger holes.

I actually did mechanical stuff tonight!

Now that the floor is done, I was able to finally install the crossmember and confirm that it all lines up. Which it does.

I only get maybe 45 minutes of light on weekday evenings this time of year. So, that was pretty much the extent of it tonight.

Transfer case is in. Vent lines are all done and connected to the new shifter retainer. Had to relocate a couple of harness brackets towards the very rear. That 1” extra length of the transmission being the culprit obviously. Now that it’s all up in there; It looks like, well, stock.
I ran out of daylight before I could get the propeller shafts in. I still need to clean up and paint the “new” front shaft anyway.

Rear shaft in. Filled the trans with fluid. Cleaned up and did most of the paint prep to the front shaft. We’re getting close.

I am, I am. Barring any major tragedies, it’ll be drivable on Monday. Heck, possibly tomorrow.

    I’m curious.

I realize that there’s several guys that are closely watching this thread. What can I do, once it’s running again, to share/convey via TW the experience/difference? Like, what do you want to see?

Cruising RPMs in 5th and 6th to see how those OD gears compare to the turd of an OD gear in the RA60F and if its noticeably sluggish off the line with the taller 1st gear. I'm guessing 1st gear won't really be much of a noticeable difference. Of course 5th and 6th will be a drastic change, I'm curious how much of a change it will be.
