Hi, I have a 2006 trd off road taco and it won’t go in reverse from time to time but it will every other gear. Some times I hope in start it and it will back up just fine. Other times I Get in I’ll try and it will take ten minutes for it to go. I’ll go through all of the gears pressing and releasing the clutch with each shift some times it helps sometimes it doesn’t. I’ve tried replacing the shifter seat bushings the reverse light switch changed the tranny fluid 15 times cause it sound a little fucky that never help. I’ve checked the clutch arm assembly to make sure it wasn’t broken but everything thing seems to be intact but the adjustment is maxed out for the most part.

Throw it in 1st when you first get in and just rock the truck forward a bit and then throw in R.

By sounding funky what does that mean, and for how long has it been hard to put in reverse

Sounds to me like that transmission has to come apart.

how many miles are on the truck? Have you replaced the delrin cap on the nose of the shifter? You've changed the oil 15 times, did you use the wrong oil every time? Hopefully you didn't follow the factory recommendations because if you did, your synchros are likely eaten up. Put a new cap on your shifter, and change the oil out with Redline MT-90 GL-4 manual transmission oil. I would do the T-case too. Run that for a month, dump it, and refill again. After that, change it every 30,000 miles. If you are still having a problem after a month, then you may have to look deeper into the transmission.

I don't think reverse is synchronized. Try this:

    1. Depress clutch, shift into 1st.
    2. With clutch still depressed, pull shifter into neutral, let out the clutch.
    3. Depress clutch again, then shift into reverse.

This procedure slows down the output shaft allowing easier reverse shifts.

i try to rock it from first and every now and again it’ll work but rarely. By sounding funky, the only way I an think to describe it is that it sometimes depending on how cold sounds like the clicking sound the old Astro vans would make when they would accelerate.

My truck has 105xxx, Also every time I chainged the tranny fluid I did use read line and just changed it sour every few hundred miles hoping it would clear something up. What is the cap on the shifter you’re talking about I’m not 100%. I put in a short throw just for the hell of it to see if that would help anything but it made it tougher to get in reverse if anything.

just curious, with the engine off, does it go into reverse?
it doesn't matter if you push on the clutch to do this.

If it does smoothly, start the engine, with clutch pedal depressed all the way to the floor, really all the way to the floor, it should go into reverse. if it doesn't you transmission is broke!

but I'm thinking you are not getting the pedal all the way down?
    just my opinion

I just tried to do it with engine off and it doesn’t work. It’s almost like something is preventing it going into gear or it’s just a void. It’s hard to describe.

sorry yo hear that, I have an 06 as well & replaced the tranny at 190k cause going from 2nd to 3rd was grinding, it annoyed the crap out of me. I think it cost me like $2000 for the tranny & I did it myself, of course with a new clutch & throw out bearing. The truck has been great & it was worth it, cause I'm keeping it.

I have a 5 speed that had no reverse this summer and it wasn't good news. It was intermittent for a few weeks and then no reverse after that.

I realize this is a different transmission, and hope your problem isn't what mine was. As said, you're probably going to have to pull and disassemble the transmission. Here are some pics of what was wrong with mine. I ended up installing a new transmission as parts were $1300+ vs a new transmission at $2000
