"Hey did you know that businesses are trying to make as much money as they can?"

"Like, what the hell! How dare they!"

I think a lot of people also assume the person doing work on your car in the shop is competent and actually cares about your vehicle. You might ask the question “what kind of gear oil goes in the rear diff” while the person at the shop just grabs what’s cheap and available and it’s the wrong stuff. No one will care more about your vehicle than you. If you do it yourself you’ll probably do a way better job than the 18 year old getting paid flat rate to change your rear diff fluid as fast as possible.

Good shops are a different story. But if you watched the work get done at most shops you’d probably have a heart attack.

Also their’s levels. Oil changes, filters, diffs, t-case are very easy jobs with all the resources on the internet. Maybe you don’t do the tranny/coolant/brake fluid/sparkys yet - but you build into it over time with the easier stuff. And you still save money but not having the shop do the stuff you already did

I learned this years ago. I went to one of those lube places with my old '87 Prelude Si for an oil change with a coupon because it was as cheap as I could get the stuff to do it myself. They stripped the drain plug threads in my oil pan and would not take responsibilty to repair it. That oil pan replacement cost me 10x what the oil change did. I can do better work than those kind of places.

OH trust me, I know there are incompetents out there. I had a steering rack done on my previous vehicle - a Honda Civic, by an independent shop - they didn't flush the system, they put a shop rag on the new steering rack in some hodge podge attempt to do who knows what, the lines busted on me when I was on vacation in Florida. The non flushed fluid destroyed 2 power steering pumps. The shop had good reviews, I did some research only to later find out they were having friends of the shop post reviews.

A $5,000 insurance claim later, I was out of that mess.

It's like anything in life - there's good ones and bad ones....I can't get any independent shop around me to return a phone call or an email. So I sort of end up doing some work at the dealer - the stuff that's affordable - and then hunting for an independent shop for other stuff.

I can't get an independent shop to call me back with a quote on a spark plug job - and no I'm not equipped to do the job myself.....I know that suggestion will come again lol

I get your point. But I kind of take issue with businesses taking advantage of a customer's ignorance in a pressure situation. It's one thing upselling a restaurant bill with a "our peanut butter pie is excellent, would you like to try it?" suggestion. But it's another to try and sell me unneeded dental services when I am laying there slobbering with my mouth open and I have no ability to research and question what I am being told I needed.

Nothing ventured nothing gained, with TW and YT anything becomes possible.

Let them do the whole service package, not just parts of it. Thats why they won't call you back, you're wasting their time.

I'm betting someone said ''catalytic converter'' [or cat converter] and not CVT. And yes, dead plugs can ruin those.

I heard that not changing your oil ruins your headlight fluid

it sure can! That's why we send fluid samples to Gray Ghost Suppository Services to make sure we don't have lamp filament in our fluid, or any other contaminants.

For sure. I'm not working in a stone driveway, that's on an angle, to do spark plugs lol but some folks think everyone on TW is a DIYer or "Shadetree mechanic" whatever that is. Plus knowing my slumlord he has a rule about no working on cars.

Change the oil yourself and keep driving it. Most of the stuff recommended at 60,000 miles simply says to check or inspect a bunch of stuff. It doesn't say to replace it.

Most of us are millionaires with all the tools, a lift, big AC’d garage, and a hot spouse that works in her undies on our trucks.
