I keep hearing about people with no retirement savings. But I don't KNOW any of them. Maybe some of them don't have a big pile of moolah, but everyone seems to have at least a little something. I think that eTrade ad is deceptive, basically telling us that kids under 21 don't have any retirement savings. Well no s**t sherlock!

Teeth. Ugh. I had a metric buttload of cavities when I was younger, no matter what I did I'd have 3 or 4 every time I went to the dentist. That stopped in my adult years but now my dentist is telling me I should start getting crowns. According to her it's a better alternative to deep decay, root canal, and the rest of it. Apparently a crown preserves the core underneath. She told me ALL of her molars are crowns now! She's not the type to have needless work done so I guess I have to take her at her word. First crown happens later this month!

:pout: man you're no fun, Carl. I NEED some new ear rings.... actually 3 pairs  :D Good luck with the fishing

    nice

    :sorry:

    Mine is already 10 1/2 and I'm not 60 yet :D

They waived my entry, so :notsure: What's wrong in the 50's thread?

I shared that buttload of cavities - have a mouthful of cavities and 4 or 5 crowns. My dentist keeps telling me I need more crowns... I'm not having issues and he says he can't guarantee what will happen when he starts on them... so, gonna wait.

    happy Sunday boys!!!

I have under two grand in savings, but can access more if needed within a few days. This savings thing, is that money you only get 1/2 % interest on at the bank or include money in annuities and/or mutual funds etc.?

Dang Sue, I have a couple of coyote canine teeth I could send you to make ear rings out of!
    :D

Dave, plenty of blue collar people in our area have no retirement savings. I guess it depends on where you live, earnings, and the lifestyle you chose in most cases, plus there are other equations that may come into play.

Duane, I prefer the stock market. "NOTHING" is 100% safe, but for a much better return I like relatively safe stocks such as utilities. They can fluctuate in price, but I try to buy them well off their highs if possible.
I have a particular fondness for PP&L which is headquartered just South of me, right now yielding around 5.22% and I'm watching it closely. If I wanted a higher yield I would also buy some Buckeye Partners (BPL) yielding over 9%, but that's a PITB come tax time because it's a limited partnership and you get the tax info. really late.
This is what I do for supplemental income on money I don't necessarily need, and always have enough in cash in the account just in case, like anything not for everyone.

Carl, I know a lot of people from all walks of life so it's a mixed bag. There are some who have a pension but not much in savings, I kind of give them a pass because they worked hard for a long time at getting that pension.

    FYI people.
I did not want to start a “conversation “ about retirement.
I just thought it was a funny commercial and scenarios where hilariously funny.
Gotta respect the old timers. Never give up.

Going to be the magic number this year. Almost 70 sigh.

The wife and I had a discussion about this earlier today. I had commented that a lot of us baby boomers do not have a lot of savings. She replied that we are not typical. A lot of baby boomers have 3 kids and college and are taking care of ageing adults or have had to do that. Funds would be limited in these cases. We are also not typical in that we chose to save rather than spend money on McMansions high priced cars and/or gadgets.

We may not live large but we do take one nice vacation a year and usually buy what we need.

A job I had in town quite a while back where we were a Chevron Jobber, we had a cardloc fuel system also, every month, people who I thought were well off would come into the office and ask how much they needed to pay to have their card unlocked. Living the American dream but good.

Turning 69 next month....owned over a hundred vehicles, rebuilt dozens of their engines and did all kinds of major work on them. Never owned a Toyota of any kind until six years ago I bought a 2000 Tacoma with over 100k miles.........
Don't these Tacoma's ever break......I don't ever recall owning a more reliable used vehicle, my tools are starting to collect dust.
