Some personal observations on travel during the corona virus situation.
My wife and I just returned via airplane to California from a week long trip to Pennsylvania. What was most noticeable was that the planes to and from were half to two thirds full. Lots of empty seats. We fly several times a year for pleasure (we are retired) and I cannot remember a domestic flight in the last 10 plus years that wasn’t 100% full. Airports were obviously less populated.. not empty but far fewer people than usual. I expected to see most people at airports with masks but saw very very few. Life at airports was mostly normal with the exception of fewer people there and in the planes. The hotel in Lancaster we stayed at was almost empty. I’d guess less than a quarter occupancy. When I rented a car in Harrisburg , Pa. Enterprise had only 4 left. Was told people are returning cars not to where they rented them but to the closest Enterprise agency and then flying home from there. One nice thing , I rented a giant Chevy Suburban for the price of a compact. They are wheeling and dealing to get people to rent vehicles. The Suburban was huge but a real pleasure to drive. Wasn’t fun driving and parking in Lancaster or Harrisburg though. Appears the whole travel industry is going to bleed $$$ for the foreseeable future. Only reason we went was to attend a family wedding. No more travel plans for several months.
One of the best things was gasoline in Pa. was on average $1.00 or more a gallon cheaper than California.

And the gas in PA cost more than in NY. Go figure.

How I spent my day. Thought someone had a bad back? Just have to make sure my new pipe sets low enough, old one was cracked by a large root, leaking a few feet from the tank, so lucky I don't have to dig up my leach field, tanker pumped out the tank this AM.. It's been 39 years since I had this put in. Bought the undeveloped acre in '80.
Gas in town is a little under $3.

    Evening all:
WOW, WOW, WOW, almost got scammed.
A buddy of mine started e mailing me about that he needed money to buy a gun, it's a Remington 600 .350 Mag. that both of us have, and I know he buys them here and there. He said he had trouble with his bank account not releasing funds that were on hold, and asked if I could help him out by depositing $1,200 in another account that he would provide me with so he could use that account to pay for the gun. So far I was 99.9% sure it was him because of the nature of the request, but just to be sure I e mailed him a question that "ONLY" he and I knew the answer to, it involved a hunting trip in Maine.
He answered the question correctly, so now I'm 100% sure it's him and sent a wire transfer for $1,200 to him at the account. The receiving bank wouldn't accept the money because that account wasn't set up to accept a wire transfer, and returned the money to my bank. I e mailed him and he said he would set up another account to accept wire transfers. Now this is getting old, all the e mailing and running around, so I called him, he knew nothing about it!
Here's how it seems the scammer is operating: somehow they hacked both our e mail accounts, my buddy never got the messages between me and the scammer, but when I asked the question that only he would know they let it go to his e mail so he himself could answer it, then back to the scam.
He actually just bought a 600 .350 Mag. off of gunbroker, that's where the scammer must have picked up the info. about the gun.
I'm supposed to send a new wire transfer to the new acct. tomorrow, which I said I would do as soon as I get the new account info. :D!
At my buddies house we called the bank where the account is to report that that account is being used as a scam, I have all the info. for that account, the person we talked to gave us a phone # for a credit card co. which has something to do with the acct., either needed to give them a CC# or SS# to even start to talk to them, didn't happen, called the bank back again and someone is supposed to contact me by phone tomorrow.
Seems like trying to report a scam is nowhere as easy as it should be. Here's the other thing, can't report the scam to the bank via e mail, the scammer will intercept it and be gone instantly.
Long read, but just a warning to all on here, like I said, when I asked the "security question", and it was answered correctly, it had to be my buddy!
I got lucky, if that account I sent the money to had been set up to accept the wire transfer I would have been scammed out of $1,200, never thought that could happen. The bank even kept saying it could be a scam, but that "security question" convinced me it wasn't, well it was!
Even if I get charged a $25 fee for the transfer, that was the best money I ever spent to learn what I did, guaranteed the old Boats will never make that mistake again no matter what.

Wow, Carl!! Glad you sniffed it out before you lost the money!!

Interesting day at the College yesterday as we went through the planning process for staying in an on-line mode for the next few weeks. We'll watch the spread of CV-19 before determining if we stay on-line for the rest of the semester. Had to cancel our Spring sports - hate to do that to the athletes who are using it as a Springboard to get into a big school or directly into MLB but really had no choice - no one to play at this point.

Looking forward to relaxing this weekend. My brain hurts.

    Good Morning Folks :hattip:.
WOW Carl, thanks for sharing. Glad you were able to catch on before you lost your money. These damn scammers are getting much more brazen. I will definitely pass the word to my friends to be on alert. I wish I had the tech knowledge and equipment to scam the scammers back.:) . That would be fun!

    Morning all:
Mark, Ken, I literally had lost the money, if that account would have able to accept a wire transfer it would be gone!
Everything fell into place for this to happen, it had to be that particular buddy, he somehow has a way to get into messes like that on occasion! Then because it involved either a 600 or 660 Remington Magnum, which we both are very familiar with. Then, when I asked him to answer a question that only he and I new the answer to, it was answered correctly, HOW COULD IT BE A SCAM!
These people are shrewd, they weren't letting my e mails get to my buddy, who I thought I was corresponding with, but when I asked the "positive ID question", the scammer then left it go to my buddies e mail addy so that he could answer it because the scammer couldn't.
I thought it was smart to ask a "positive ID question", looks like they have that covered also.
Call me crazy, but ever since I was a child I have always believed that I have a kind young female guardian angle, I think someone was looking over me on this one, THANK YOU!

Not bad for 30 years given the environment you live in. Hope the cost to repair was not too much.

Carl, you indeed have an Guardian Angel looking out for you. Out of curiosity what email platform do you use for your friends and family? I have used Verizon for years but a few years back they sold it to AOL with no reduction to my monthly bill. I was able to retain a Verizon account name but it is still AOL and I am not too happy with them.

Also if you go on Youtube and search for Kitboga he scams the scamer. Sometimes I wonder if his channel is all made up sort of like Professional Wrasseling. LOL

Thanks for the info. re the scam. That is about the most sophisticated scam I’ve heard of. I think I’m pretty savvy at spotting a scam but that one is new to me. For me at least before I’d loan anyone $$$ I’d talk directly to him either in person or on the phone. I’m old fashioned, I prefer to talk to people often rather than text or email. Besides being an unsophisticated old fart I don’t even know how to wire money to some one else’s account. Glad you didn’t lose the money.
(I have a friend and neighbor who was scammed out of $500,000 in a sophisticated South African diamond mine scam. He is poorer and now wiser)

He passed a year ago. He had a net worth investment portfolio of around 2+ million. He did have some cognitive problems and someone he trusted was involved in the scam. It was indeed sad.

My son is a bright kid, college grad, runs a bunch of things that require number smarts. He told me about a couple of guys scamming him out of $400 on the street. It involved people not able to get to their own money, and could he make a temporary loan, and there was this guaranteed way he would get paid back and not able to get ripped off, on and on. Somehow they smooth talked him into it, and he was out the money. It was a real wake up call to me because he's WAY sharper than I am! And yet he got duped.

The common thread I see in a lot of these things is: 1) they have the money but can't get to it, and 2) could you just put your money in this other place for a short time.

    Glad you got yours back!

Well, here's my input for today:
Now that it's getting warmer I'm seeing people w/their feet on the dash. God forbid that airbag goes off, they'll learn pretty quick not to do that again.

Here in N.E. PA I've run across this a few times lately....gas pumps, pull up, grab the nozzle, choose your octane and the gas comes flying out!! People are putting the nozzle back locked open...be careful!

Does anyone talk any more while travelling? All I see are the passengers doing something w/their heads buried in their phone...oh well.

On a good note, I went over to see my neighbor this morning. Asked if his eldest son wanted a job...before I finished dad said yes :)...so Ben will be cutting my lawn this year..(wether he likes it or not)...of course I'll pay him.

    That's all...carry on.
