Welcome to both Steve and Al!!! Pull up a chair on the porch and spend some time chatting. Enjoy a beverage of choice...but first-timers are required to fill the cooler. Oh, and don't sit in Mike's rocker!!!!

Dawn approaches here in northeast PA - yesterday was a wild one with lots of wind and snow squalls all day. Spring is here, for sure.

I fulfilled my sworn duties last evening as a Maker's Mark Ambassador - and used my favorite glass complete with a John Wayne quote.

Good Morning folks :hattip:. Have as great a Saturday as you can and be safe and healthy.

Welcome Al. Life after 60 on the porch is good. Great group in here with many different topics of discussion. Pull up a rocker (except for @Tacoma Mike 's recliner). Glad to have you here. Enjoy

I really appreciate the respect for my recliner.
I guess it’s from good upbringing in our generation.

Someone is going to have to volunteer to mow the lawn for the first time.
Who ever put it away last year I hope they did it right.
I don’t feel like working on it this spring like last year.

Wow. I am impressed. Hunting turkey with a modern shotgun is challenging. Of course we would see them everywhere during fall upland bird season in Oregon (no turkeys until spring when first introduced to OR)

    They're fun.
Half the fun is figuring out the load that the gun like in order to get a pattern. ie., amount of powder, shot, thickness of overpowder wad.
Once you get it dialed in, you stick with that "recipe" that the gun likes.
This particular gun is "Jug Choked" a little less than full choke and can pattern well at 40 yards with an once and an eights of #5's.
Jug Choking is a very old school method of choking...
And there is a Jug choke reamer tool that is used to achieve this.

JUG CHOKING. ... The principle of jug choking is that a section near the muzzle is reamed larger than bore size with critical angles on the front and rear areas to increase the pattern and performance of shot loads.

Sort of like an expansion chamber just below the muzzle and choke is determined by the cut angles going in and out of this "chamber".
I find this "old timey" tech fascinating, those guys knew their stuff 2-300 years ago.

No kidding, what muzzle velocity give or take with a load for "typical" turkey terrain trees/brush edge of openings? - just curious.

That is something I don't know without looking up.:notsure:
1 1/8 oz. of 5's coming out of a 20ga covers a lot of area, esp. when patterned. All you need is 1 "magic pellet".

Of course it's much "slower" that a modern 3" Turkey shell, but with it's limitations, it gets the job done.

    Morning all:

Agree! Many years ago I was duck hunting and a high flyer came across the field, I lead that duck by "A LOT" and fired and it dropped like a rock, when cleaning it there was 1 pellet in the neck, that single "magic pellet" was all that was needed!

You wouldn't happen to have a zero turn mower you could demonstrate to us ole timers on the porch would you?

Mike is in no mood to work on a lawn mower after keeping Toyotas running smooth all week.

According to some that’s an urban legend. Sometimes I think the best thing about history is how easily it can be rewritten.

IN.gov claims Benjamin Franklin proposed the wild turkey become the national bird but the bald eagle won by one vote. If that is factual, we almost had the turkey on many symbols of government.

Further checking confirms wdb is correct: The Franklin Institute, Smithsonian, and History Channel all agree that it is a myth that the wild turkey was considered to be the national bird.

I suppose IN.gov needs to retract their version.

Who said you can't teach on old dog new tricks? I've been teaching myself to turn vessels during the "Stay At Home" orders. Man it's nice not being an essential employee any more.

Paper clip cup for my wife's desk. The day after I gave it to her, she was laid off so it stayed here at the house in her home office.

A friend saw it and asked if I could make a cocktail "glass" from the same persimmon so I did this.

While those and another one I don't have a photo of right now were fun, pens are my usual turnings. These are my latest pens.

I know that in junior high American History we were told the Wild Turkey was Franklin's choice for the National Bird.
