gotta love that "eye candy". been digging rocks out of my yard for 23 yrs., usually between naps. good to hear from other old salts. never got to do much sea time. was stationed on USS SIMOM LAKE AS-33,Holy Loch scotland. if anyone on this site was on a SSNFBM,598-633,67-69,I probablly took them on liberty,or shuttled them during the transition from blue to gold crew. I may have shuttled the grandfather of some of the young members!

never went to boat school. none of us did. on the job training,I don't know if assault boat coxswain school would have helped that much. no piers to ship, everything done by small boats.ran boats in gale force winds, and overall rough water. qualified on 36' OMB, 50' utility boat, box-L (sort of like a small tug.we used them for crew movements when the water was really rough or foggy conditions-they had radar),and my favorite, the LCM and LCMP. loved to run those things-twin screw, turn on a dime, and could "walk" sideways. can still picture the bow rising on a crest and slamming into the trough, with water coming over the bow and spraying evervwhere again, and again and again. putting a LCM between the ship and a nuclear sub, under less than ideal conditions, can make one a little nervous. ended up as the barge coxswain.shuttled sen.stennis,adm.osborn,adm.tyree,and a few others.was supposed to carry the dep.sec.of defense, but it was pretty rough, and they were afraid he might get seasick,so they sent a box-L to get him.

^^^ Cool, When I went for the river boats in 67 we had to go to boat school in Coronada Cal. lots of class time that was :jerkoff: and 1 week in camp Pendleton for sear school to finish out we had to land a lcm (mike) on the beach with a JG looking on.. We had not 1 PBR on base as they were all going to Nam. Looking back it was one big joke but it was the Navy. In RVN it was on the job training bow hook first then ass hook then coxswain if you made E4 before your year was up. Stayed in RVN 26 mo. I knew I was not going back in the fleet hated CVA31. The duty was easy in Da Nang so I stayed till my time was up..High light in a ham and egg life. Meet some cool folks that are still pal's to this day.. Five of us are going back next summer to look around Da Nang and Hue. Looking forward to the trip... Jim

DOAH Getting old and no to the beer. I am in the process of losing a lot of weight so I may not have had enough protein today.

PBR's didn't look like too much fun. jungle on both sides. too many places to get ambushed. one of my childhood buddies was killed in nam. engineering unit-army.I stop by his grave every once in awhile. a farm kid that never hurt anyone. as far as I know there was one other guy from the area that was killed over there. another guy I know lost both legs and part of an arm. he's about 66 by now, drives, and held a job. unfortunate, but he made the best of it.
