Good morning all! Our temps hid the mid 40s yesterday and it felt like summer!! Had some light icing from the storm but that cleared quickly. More snow coming tomorrow, though. Ugh.

Back to the eye doctor today to check up on the vitreous separation. No issues so far. Life is good!

    Stay safe and warm!!

I needed this surgery for a long time, but until few years ago, insurance wouldn't cover it. I saved up until I had enough to cover it.. lo and behold, it became a covered procedure about the same time. Find yourself a good opthamoligist.. he/she will be able to tell you quickly if your insurance will cover the nut. Maybe get better insurance, if not.
Ours is United Health Care plan F, which pays the balance, after Medicare. UHC has other similar plans. Best thing I've ever done for myself, family. At our age, the sense of well being is priceless.

    Good Morning folks.
I think I might have posted it earlier about what issue I am having with the more expensive implant lens for my astigmatism. Left eye was done with normal lens and like most folks just need cheaters for reading. Had the right eye done with the special $2000 lens that they used the laser on. I didn't have problems at first but months later my distance vision in that eye was getting worse. I went back and after the exam, the doctor told me everything from the surgery looks good( but of course). Then the doc said I could get glasses, get fitted for a contact lens or get lasik done :annoyed:. I told them how about replacing that lens with a standard lens and the doc told me it wouldn't work. I am going to get a second opinion when I get home. I hate being at there mercy. I also don't want to have to wear glasses or have to get a contact lense (they can be a PITA with cleaning and drops) or to have lasik and have issues from that down the road. My wife had the radial carototamy(sp.) Done years ago and now she is having all kinds of issues with her vision. All I can say is do your research before you get it done. If I had done that on the lense I got I wouldn't had had it done. The success rate for that lens is 92 to 93%. Guess where I fello_O.
Anyway, hope everyone has a safe day and be careful.

Good morning. 25 degrees here this morning. We will probably have a weather event tomorrow, snow, sleet, rain or maybe ice weatherman is not sure. LOL Stay warm today and do not go out unless you have to.

    Good morning all,

A balmy 6 degrees this morning with a skiff of new snow, more predicted for later today only 4-6 inches.

Although I do not have cataract issues (at this time) I find it very interesting on the different approaches each of you have had to take. Good info and thank you, making a mental note just in case.

Off to the cardiologist today for a consultation, with all the battery of tests the last few weeks the CR Cardio Scan showed my left ventricle was partially blocked while my right was clean as a whistle (widow maker). This is likely due to family history of heart disease, I feel great and work out three to four times a week. Already changed diet years ago due to the diabetic issues (another gift from my family) so now we see what approach we take with the ticker. It's hell getting old...

Be safe everyone and do stay warm - warm thoughts to our Texas friends. Have two nieces in Texas, have been staying in touch with them in case they need help - we are only twelve hours away by truck if need be.

    Good morning

sitting at a sunny -6 degrees currently. Supposed to get up to 18 today. A couple more cooler days then into the 30’s get the shorts and crocs out!! Can’t stand wearing flip flops. No plans for today other then heading back to work while the wife vacations in FL. at her sisters place in North Port.
She flys home into Madison Saturday and our son and family lives about 45 minutes from there so I’m going down to hang with him for a while then meet up with her and head home.
Haven’t seen them since Christmas so excited for that.

    Stay well

We had power, glorious power. Made my expresso, just sat down, power out.

My wife fessed up there was "more to the story about her surgery". It is a special lens due to astigmatism. Insurance will cover the normal lens for cataracts, but not that special lens due to price and it can be corrected with glasses. We spend a fortune on her glasses, so just hoping all goes well with both eyes.

We are not used to this much cold weather in Austin, TX.

I'm on well/septic. Winterizing isn't done here for the pool, just leave the pump running.

It was 35 mph wind, 5F, so -15F windchill. When we lost power, too cold to drain the pool DE filter nor the Pump. Hindsight I should have crammed pool noodles into the filter-basket, to give ice room to expand. Lost feeling in my fingers, so back inside asap to prevent damage.

The pumphouse for the well is insulated and heated by a 100W bulb. No power, so not able to trickle facets, no pump house heat. Pipes froze and burst.

We have bottled drinking water, but conserving what I have. Toilets take about 2 gallons to flush. Normally when we have lost power I use a bucket and pool water to flush toilets. 2" of ice in the pool. I was going to rig up a wood drill and siphon hose, but two people and three toilets. My wife doesn't like the camping method (homer bucket, kitty litter, heavy-duty bag). Takes too much heat to melt snow (buckets of snow produce a cup of water, she has never been snow camping). Her idea of roughing it is a three-star hotel, I'm happy in any condition but admit a hot shower would be nice.

No power, no heat, no water. Ice Station Zulu? Nope, Austin, TX.

I've been watching all these posts about weather from you folks having hard times. It is so unusual for the west to have massive electrical outages unless we use our air conditioners too much. We had snow last night and the night before, but just a skiff and it will probably be melted before noon or so.
Still... we're hoping that all of you get your power on soon and can relax. Be safe.

Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Band released in 1967 , the year I graduated from high school. Lots of memories there. I grew up in the San Francisco, Oakland Bay Area and 1967 was the summer of love, Haight Ashbury, great concerts by 60’s groups like the Grace Slick and the Jefferson Airplane , Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead and on and on. That album was number one in the US for over 3 months. You would hear the songs from that album playing all over the “Haight”. The Summer of Love was quite memorable but this is probably not the appropriate forum to share those memories. Yep definitely a trip down memory lane for this old codger. And 64 is also just a memory.

Let’s just say being young and having a certain amount of energy and stamina was an asset that summer. Since my wife is sitting next to me on the sofa I think I’ll not say more.:)

Well, a little SE of @roundrocktom , and the day started with a highlight of 33* when I got out of bed. Went to rinse the coffee spoon, and trickle water. What? Pipe had been kept up and flowing - wife said City just shut down the water pressure to "near none". And boil notice. Pool is running, so there are about 20K gallons that can be grabbed. Still have power and heat, so no complaints, just inconvenient to clean up the old fashioned way after dinner!
Never did get above freezing as hoped. Tonight and tomorrow? 2" - 4" snow on top of the freezing ice from last night! Yes! That will be just great thank you. Austin area going for the record on days below freezing too, probably hit it tomorrow afternoon! 140+ hours or so.
Some roads did get cleared in Central Texas, mostly highways, and happily many people got power back. I know too many that didn't, or short spurts. By Friday, they say the weather will clear and warm.
Twenty eight years in Michigan, including the Great Blizzard of 78. Other than not being under 3'+ of snow, never had "civilization conditions" been this bad.

    Evening all:
I feel for those down in TX for what they are going through, just try to stay safe as best as possible. We who live in the Northern US are at least somewhat prepared for that type of weather and it just becomes a minor inconvenience for the most part.

Just saw something that amazed me, a local convenience store has a vending machine where you can purchase bitcoins!
We live in a small town, and there are more than a few who can afford to buy them @ around 52K each, wondering if anyone will actually use that machine to buy them though, I think I would go down a different avenue if I wanted to invest in them.

A back step for when I get older, Carhartt seatcovers, 4Runner wheels, Topper, and "tats all folks"! --for now!!
Maybe this is a dumb suggestion, but I live in Missouri and if I would know my heat would be off in my house for a amount of time that would freeze my pipes , I Would turn off my main supply valve except when I absolutely need water. Has no one in Texas thought of doing this simple task. The pictures of the water running through out the homes has me horrified of those repair bills!?

Many pics you see are in apartments, where fire pipes got mandated, and there is nowhere near enough insulation.

But, yes, and since many can't have power, and now their water has been curtailed, it is SUGGESTED that they turn off their water completely. Since many of these shutoffs are buried under snow and ice we don't get (mine is), and not many have a shutoff tool or large pliers (I do), not a whole lot of folks might be able to comply. IF they are inside the home. I am OK, but there are way too many that aren't . Boil your water with no power? Yeah, great. The complaint from those in charge was that water use was an all time high - because we are dripping our pipes to keep them from exploding. Yeah, your heat is shut down, your power is off, and please shut off all water too, because it's a hardship on the system.

Third world indeed, and I am done with comments. Sorry, so I don't get banned.

Ken, You mention the Summer of Love... It occurs to me that my (our) first son was conceived during the Monterey Pop Festival. I did not attend, as I had a wife, a job, and rent to pay. Still, it's something I can tell my son, as he has an extensive record collection of all the musicians of the day! Come to think of it, he likely has already made that connection himself! He also, if memory serves, went to school with the deceased Metallica member, which solidified his permanent fan status of that group.

Shutting off the water captures water between two off valves, not good. Best to shut off with spigots opened. Not necessarily to drain the system, but to relieve pressure from expanding water as it freezes.
We here in the west don't get that sort of weather very often, but I did have a garden hose bib pipe burst one day some years ago. Ever since, I keep pipe insulation on all outside pipes!
Seeing the extensive water damage on the evening news this week, not to mention the human suffering, I feel silly even mentioning my little pipe burst incident. :(
