My soil is so bad it needs something.the problem is the good spots do grow faster.
    But that’s ok.
I knew that before I retired lol

A little something every chance we get.
Good Morning Porch People! Another grey dawn, with more rain on the slate today. It's a little old already, but if we don't get it in May, we won't get it! So, another inch yesterday. Did manage to get the smoker seasoned in between rains, so it's 321 ribs this afternoon, rain or not. I THINK I have it's WiFi running, but out in front of a closed garage door is not a place for reception. Comes out back here in a bit. That and Cup at COTA is it for the day.

It's a pretty small 16", and for the times I have used it, I never make an under cut - I just let it rest on the top of the branch until it gives, then cut the straggle. Sometimes, I will just use that manual saw on the extension pruner. So, the E-Saw on a stick was worth it's $79 so far. Off the stick, it works well enough for this place. And now, I only have a Crepe Myrtle and a Yew.

My OFFICIAL recommendation as a simple starting point is aeration. You might have someone can do it - no one comes to our town, and the machines are ridiculous to rent and handle. The solution is LIQUID AERATION. I get mine in a bottle, once a year, and spray it on in the late winter (might be later for you), then water it in. Most all yards in older homes have very compacted soil. So the first place to start is in the soil. What I use, I get from Amazon, but other people have it (not in my town though). It's not fast, but bad spots start to respond within a month - if you really had bad spots, you might treat again. We have Augustine grass, and it's a runner spreader. If you use seed grass, you can plant right after treating, and not be afraid of treating again.

EDIT: forgot the link: Amazon.com : Liquid Aerating Soil Loosener- Aerator Soil Conditioner- No Mechanical or Core Aeration- Simple Lawn Solutions- Any Grass Type, All Season- Great for Compact Soils, Standing Water, Poor Drainage. : Garden & Outdoor

    Good morning all,

Busy day yesterday - for Alice anyway... We were supposed to get severe thunderstorms all day - fortunately / unfortunately nothing came to the west of the Peak, everything staid on the I-25 corridor and boy did they get hit (Pueblo to Denver got slammed).

Alice started on sanding all of our fire pit/patio chairs and tables to re-paint, she sanded all but one chair and will finish today before priming (not Prime Mike). I will share pics when completed.

We got our storms in the middle of the night, I usually sleep through them but these were crazy, thunderstorm with fire works at 0130 then extremely high winds around 1215 then hard rain and I mean hard, we had a family of raccoons hunker down under our deck which had the dogs going nuts - I NEED A NAP. It was still raining at 0630 when I walked the dogs and boy was everything soaked. Need to wait until it dries out a little before starting our Sunday projects.

Have a great day and be safe

So much for finishing the sanding today - sun is out and we just got slammed with a hail shower. Cloudy to the north, south and east, sunny to the west (partly). Altitude, we blame all odd weather patterns on the altitude - its easier that way.

RACCOONS! That's it! Reminded me that my wife said a friend was complaining in a chat group that SOME people from Austin are literally coming up to complete strangers here in restaurants and such, and asking if they want to sell their house. Today. Above market. It's gotten to that! Which then YOU reminded me that Tuesday afternoon and evening, we had some out of towners checking out the house as well. RACCOONS GOT ZILLOW!

"How modern! Solar on the roof; I wonder what the electricity runs here? Have to come back tonight and see more."
    RaccoonSolar.jpg

"This is convenient, an automatic shower in the front yard! Wait until I tell the wife!!"

"And look at this pool, sweetie!"
"Oh, yes! And these plants are so pretty!"
"Sure hope our agent can swing this....Raccoon Heaven right here. I'm gonna go see if there is garbage."

Apparently, they couldn't work the financing. Haven't seen them since. But, that being Tuesday night, the garbage cans had been freshly emptied. On that account, I did not put up a new ear of corn on the squirrel feeder.

It's not raining on me! But I'm smoking out there! WiFi works great, despite the bad reviews the app gets. Judging by the complaints they had, they just plain stupid.

Coons are a serious problem here. The only two natural enemies are cars and coyotes. But the coyotes have figured out pets are easier prey.

But, fortunately I have a solution.

We have fox here and the rabbit, cat and goose population is next to nothing so hopefully the racoons will be next. I don't know if fox will go after them or not. Nice racoon hunter .

A bit big for fox. Predators have to be very hungry before they go after prey that can injure them.

Coyotes will pack up or just be in family groups and this allows taking more aggressive prey.

I know fox will form family groups but I have never heard of them packing up.

    Morning all:
You were warned Mike, you will need to soon find a job to get a rest after retiring! Yea, I know it's tough being retired, hope you're enjoying every minute of it.
Condolences also to your co worker and the family, and good luck with the race car.
Mowed the grass yesterday, it's really dry now and dusty and I was a mess, got down by the pond and:annoyed:, the bear was in the pond and pushed the drain pipe over AGAIN! :(
Watching for cicadas, haven't seen any on the property so far.
For the gun owners, I had mentioned I bought a 660 6.5 Rem. Mag.
The gun was missing the sights which are easy to find, so I ordered them off e bay, in order to mount the rear sight it must be partially disassembled to access the mounting screws that mount it to the barrel, how hard can this be, take one screw out of the side, mount the base, and put the screw back in! Well, of course, I couldn't get the screw to line up with the hole on the opposite side of the base, so after multiple tries I broke out the persuader, a small brass hammer, and after a little pushing, twisting, and tapping, it finally popped into the hole and I could screw it in the rest of the way, NOTHINGS EASY!

No cicada sightings here either Carl, but got a bunch of aphids on the wife's rose bush an crepe myrtle. I need to get the hose out and blast them off and get a systemic that will feed the plants and keep the buggers away.
Glad you got the sight on Carl. Sometimes a little friendly persuasion works when talking to it doesn't work . Now to get out and sight it in:thumbsup:.
Have a good day Carl and enjoy.
