    Good morning everyone!!

Craig went on t be a judge after the Revolutionary war. Brevet ranks were honorary and did not confer the authority or pay that would normally come with a promotion.

After getting the bees situated and the water valve replaced on Lynn's mom's refrigerator I didn't do much of anything except sweep dead bees out of the back of the truck. Turned out to be a good move because it feels like the pinched nerve in my back is healing.

I need to get the grass cut between today and tomorrow - hopefully the weather will cooperate. We're supposed to get showers again for the next two days.

    Stay safe!

Good morning. We went to the Maryland Zoo last night for a Sip and Stroll. Food was better than decent and the beer selection was impressive. Part of the stroll was a visit to the Monkey house and the Giraffe house with talks by one of the naturalist assigned to house. The rain held off for the entire time we were at the zoo so that made for a cool and comfortable walk.

Today is smoking up some chickens to take over to my sister's house this afternoon. I put the chickens in a brine yesterday afternoon and will rub them down around 10:00 this morning. I hope the rain moves out by 10:00 to 11:00 this morning. Right now the rain is steady.

Good Morning Folks. Not a nice day at all...still rainy and miserable.

    Thank you for posting Ken.

I have driven past many small graveyards in my area that is known for American revolution battles. After reading your post Trvlr, I will make it a point to stop at some of them to walk through the markers and ponder what it was in their day that they contended with. Thank you for the post. It was very well written.

Many stories of lives lost. RIP to all who paid the ultimate price. Thank You. :oldglory:

    Morning all:
Thanks for the replies, I never heard the term Brevet used before, learn something new everyday!
I served under a Commodore for awhile, no such thing except in time of war and it's actually a one star admiral, he was the senior captain and carried that title.

Well, it was close...... tender enough, probably could have left the temp up instead of dialing down, but I was worried about too much cook once I got to 195 and had 4 hours to go! Should have left it.... Decent bark and very tender, mediocre smoke ring. Considering it's been over a decade since I actually smoked one, I'll say OK, and we'll eat all the leftovers! I cut off the very end of the flat, and tried some burnt ends for fun. Well, everyone had a couple!

Watching the National Memorial Day Concert as I type this. I’m reminded of a Memorial Day a few years ago, when I had occasion to visit the VA Clinic here in Livermore.
At the door, I was greeted by a Nurse, who was making her rounds pushing a cart loaded with cookies and cakes, some small lapel flags, and a box full of small envelopes. She thanked me for my service, which when heard, always puts a lump in my throat.
She asked if I’d like a cookie, to which I responded in the affirmative, and with the other hand, gave me one of the envelopes. I was surprised and caught off guard by this encounter, but tried an appropriate smile and a thank you, proceeding to my appointment inside.
The cookie went in my pocket, as I had labs to do, but the envelope was opened in the waiting room. The lump in my throat returned en force, which produced an accompanying sound I cannot describe. Within the envelope was a folded paper, upon which was small Stars & Stripes, done with a crayon, and captioned, Thank you for your service, I love you!
A small signature, and a grammar school was identified. My face contorted, and my eyes teared up with emotion.
I was lucky. I had not experienced combat during my service, and I steal no Valor. Yet, I do take pride in my being there, and I do greatly thank those who were there and sacrificed for me and mine.

Good morning everyone. Raining again here this morning. Still hopeful that I can get the grass cut today. Definitely not a pool day here.

As some of you have already noted, take a moment during your day to remember those men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in military service to our Nation. Not a day for all veterans, it is on this day that we remember the fallen. (Credit for what I think is one of the most inspiring and touching photos ever taken to Frank Glick who captured this eagle sitting atop a gravestone one morning at Fort Snelling, MN. Rest in Peace, Frank. Your iconic photo lives on.)

Looks great and with a lot of juices. I have yet to master cooking a brisket myself. It is not an easy cut of beef to master. One thing I have learned is that until the bark is set you cannot wrap the brisket. I smoked some chickens yesterday there might have been 1 breast quarter left at the end of dinner.

I just happened upon this picture today - Memorial Day 1989, taken at the North Africa American Cemetery, Tunis, Tunisia where I assisted Senators Arlen Specter (PA) and Chuck Robb (VA) in placing a wreath in honor of the fallen during the North African Campaign, WWII.

When I was boy we would journey to Indianapolis for a family gathering that my grandmother called "decoration day". Traditional school year allowed this ...... We would visit several cemetaries, but I doubt I could find them now. In the afternoon aunts uncles and cousins would gather to sit behind my maternal grandfathers house and listen to the 500 mile race and share a feast of comfort foods - and tell the funny stories that accumulate from a large extended family. Because of the age group nearly all of my uncles were WWII vets - some Navy, some Army and a merchant mariner with nerves of steel that made several trips to England and back on convoy duty. None of them were inclined to talk of their service - and I only learned of their experiences long after - when they were gone.

My great uncle hit the beach at Normandy, Omaha I think, most of his platoon killed. Heard him speak of it once at a Memorial Day family gathering. He was quite drunk, my Dad and uncles helped him to a car to be driven home. I remember he was broke down and sobbing as they put him in the car. I think I was about 10-12 years old, but it's a memory I've never forgot. :(

Kids made it over yesterday for dinner. Ribs, Beans, Potato Salad, Deviled Eggs. Homemade strawberry shortcake and a cheesecake for dessert. Great dinner made even better with the family present! One son in San Diego, another off for a Mountain Bike even in Arkansas, but good to have two kids & friends over.

The Masterbuilt Electric Smoker I got from Lowes had an issue. Less than a month old, the little wood chip scoop warped, so it doesn't slide in. Simple sheet metal warped from heat, so it doesn't slide in and lock, so you can not use it as intended. SWMBO was not happy at all. I'm thinking, "remake this piece with some 0.120 wall steel tubing.... yep, a typical Engineer who wants to improve and fix things. My wife "take it back." I do need to take photos and document the issue, but we paid $250 for it. Had I paid $2500 I would have blown a gasket, but for $250 I get it. Need to talk my son into welding us a 1/4" steel smoker with a firebox. I don't have time to be a pitmaster!

I never heard stories from my Dad about WWII. Most WWII Vets never talked about the action they saw. When Deb and I were in Normandy France a month before the 60th Anniversary of DDay, we were at the American Cemetery on Omaha Beach. There was a group of West Point Cadets that placed a boguet of flowers at the memorial. A family was standing watching when a lady from the family approached the Cadets to say it was really appreciated by her Grandfather seeing the ceremony. When the Cadets found out that he survived DDay, they surrounded him shaking his hand and thanking him and asking so many questions. The Veteran started tearing up and told the Cadets that still after all these years he still can't talk about the war. The Cadets asked if it would be okay to have a picture taken with him and he said it would be an Honor.
