Great memory. I was 7 1/2, my God mother took me to a very fancy theater called the Paramount in Oakland California. She bought me popcorn and a soda and some chocolate candy sold in theaters called Flicks. The movie for a 7 year old was mind boggling. It’s all I could talk about for months. Even 60+ years later it’s a vivid fond memory.

Moby Dick opened at the Oakland Paramount in June, 1956. If you also saw Auntie Mame at the Paramount a little over two years later, I may have used my flashlight to guide you to your loge seat in the balcony. You might remember the skinny kid with the Ill fitting ushers jacket? I think that movie had a 3 week run at the Paramount, my being a vacation relief usher, I viewed that movie and accompanying cartoon 45 times. Next to the last civilian job I held before enlisting in the Navy. The Paramount underwent full restoration some years later, today being available for special events.

Don’t think I saw Auntie Mame. I know from our previous communications that you and I lived and spent much time in Oakland. I wouldn’t be surprised if our paths crossed sometime in Oakland. By the way last week I drove to Oakland (about 100 miles from where I live now) to have lunch with several old high school buddies (none of us currently live in Oakland). Had lunch at Quinn’s Lighthouse if you know where that is. It’s been there 60 or so years, I was surprised it was still a going restaurant/bar. Use to go there in my 20’s and drank copious amounts of alcohol there. Still has great food and drink.

Yes, I know Quinn's! Do you remember the Canton Ferry at Jack London Square? I was a busboy on that till it went bankrupt. It was a ferry that came down from Seattle, I think, don't know where it is now, but it was a Chinese restaurant in my day. Seafood Grotto next door, that's gone now too. I don't even recognize JL Square anymore!

Don’t remember the Ferry but I remember well the Sea Food Grotto, great food. Also remember the Sea Wolf restaurant and the Elegant Farmer Restaurant. Great food, both long gone. Scott’s Sea Food is where the Sea Wolf was. Yes Jack London Square is a far different place than it was back in the day. When I was in the area last week there was lots of homeless and lots of graffiti.

Yep, you're right, the Seawolf was directly next to the Ferry. I also worked as a busboy at the Seafood Grotto, and was fired for getting fall down drunk on the job... A banquet with opened bottles of wine never drunk because the guests spent all their time at the bar! I couldn't just pour all that wine down the drain! Seawolf declined my application for some unknown reason. :annoyed:

Oakland Police can't deal with the homeless anymore. They're going to move out and let the homeless take over the Police station. Is that reverse Gentrification, or what?

    Good morning fellow Porchatonians!

4" of wet snow yesterday. The driveway just got slushy except for right in front of the garage which is shaded from the sun - had to shovel that off a few times. And, more snow coming on Saturday! Woo hoo!!

We got about 1/2" of the 2" to 4" the so-called forecasters told us to expect. I'm not complaining!

I would just caution that we can easily lose someone to a politics ban here. Tread easily, my friends.

Big Owl showed up last night - they like the rear peak of my house because of its overview of the wash. Let a dog out at 3:30 AM and the rascal asked "who" was there. Wonder what sort of place to live they find around here - not a lot of open lofts and such. The little pygmy size guys live here and I've happened on them relatively often - but this one was the "barn size". Always surprises me when they speak up ........

Pretty chilly here for March in AZ - close to freezing (34º) the last three mornings. The local coyotes are pretty fluffy.

With gas prices up and the stock market wavering it might be a good time to look at investments.

Anyone have a hidden gem they are watching? Something that they expect to dive deep enough to make it attractive?
