Carl: It must be me. About 20 years ago CS offered a limited managed account for a set fee. You could have 2 consultations a year. The account did really well and I was making 11 to 13% on the investment. It took about 3 years for CS to run the numbers and realizing they were not making as much as they could with a fully managed account. CS stopped the service and informed me that in order to continue with a managed account I would need to have at least $1,000,000.00 in the account. I was not quite at that figure yet, so I looked for other alternatives. I still miss that account. It had a lot of bang for the buck.

:pccoffee: Good Morning Porch Peoples! Sun is out, rain is over - we'll take that 0.35" thank you - and I have a stock of everything I need to be working on the yard, plants, or the truck. What'll it be? Who knows, I need more coffee for weighty decisions.

And a apology on my part; seems I can't keep up with a the special days, and I found late last night, that yesterday was Vietnam Veterans Day. I did not know this, and I know there are a few here. So, please let me thank you for your service, and it's an honor to be on the same thread as you. :oldglory:

I was unaware of the Viet Nam Veterans day, too. I think it is interesting, and good, that the public attitude toward veterans has changed significantly since those people returned.

I have a friend in Seattle area that had to buy a tshirt in the airport because he couldn't wear his uniform outside the airport after coming home from Vietnam. A cheap airport tshirt.

I don't know that "the attitude" was significantly different back when we were protesting the war. I know there were always the extremes that took everything they did too seriously, and I know there were returning vets that got hassled by those extremes, but most of the protestors and protests I experienced were supportive of the vets more than not. We knew they were stuck doing a dirty job and we wanted the war to end so they could come home. That's what the feeling was in my crowd... and most others we engaged with.
I think the narrative has been changed over time so the public has been made to feel guilty over the protests. Personally, I see it as just another way "the man" is manipulating us. Ya gotta wonder why there were no significant protests over our twenty year war with Afganistan/Iraq... and if those boys would have come home earlier if the public was less worried about insulting the warriors and more in tune with protesting a useless war.

2 1/2 years of my 4 year hitch was served Stateside, during which I hitch hiked extensively in uniform. When I got out in July of '63, I wore my uniform to hitch hike home one last time. Viet Nam at that time was not on everyone's mind. Very soon after, however, no serviceman in his right mind would dare wear his uniform in public. I was having mixed feelings about the war myself, but it felt shitty that the public was not supporting the troops. A good friend of mine was aboard a carrier, returning home under the Golden Gate Bridge, and got splashed, along with many of his shipmates, with red paint from protesters on the bridge above. I'm tearing up even now remembering that story from long ago.

Well as I said... it's not that servicemen didn't get hassled... it is only that they were being hassled by the extremists. I did meet a few extremists and had some words with them on occasion. A lot of the "Patty Hearsts" were out to prove they were more faithful than anyone else to radicalism. Most people I knew and met were far more sympathetic to servicepeople and still opposed to the war.
As said... the narrative has changed.
Hell... those in Nam were our brothers more than likely. We wanted the war to end so they could come home.

Edit... In fact I was in uniform during the last year of the war, and in San Franscisco and other large cities, and never hassled or felt anything but respected.

With respect, as I recall, by the end of the war, radicals were far outnumbered by mainstream opposition to the war, and I’m thinking Kent State was a major impetus toward that end. There was never forgiveness for Jane Fonda from anyone I knew.

I agree... radicals were outnumbered by mainstream opposition. And Kent State definitely had an impact, perhaps radicalizing more people than any other event.

I would like to have a drink with Fonda... and some others. I'd like to know what they think now, in retrospect. At least if they would be honest. It would make for some interesting docu-drama if someone would gather all the big names in protesting the war and see what they have to say, now.

Now, I have a problem with your characterization of radicals as being mainstream. Kent State brought the mainstream to opposition to the war, not to radical action or radical thinking.
Kent State brought the mainstream to speak what they had been holding back. Speaking your piece is not radical action.

I quoted your own words. I thought you and I were seeing things in a similar light.

It doesn't matter. It's old history. The only thing I object to is how the narrative has been changed to make victims of the warriors coming home. I, and everyone I protested with, fully supported the people doing the fighting... but not the war. And that was mainstream.
