    I'm not sure what you suspect? It's not some isolated secret fund separate from any other part of the cost of gas. It's simply a historical feature of gasoline marketing that has standardized in the U.S.
    The part of gas prices that pisses me off is the gas tax. In California, it's 56.6¢ per gallon, supposedly going to highway maintenance, but gets diverted to whatever they decide to spend it on, my biggest gripe being traffic lanes completely banned to cars, and dedicated to bicycles that don't even pay a bike license like they used to. Now they even replace parking spots with bike parking for rent-a-bike companies, and paint bike lanes green. I wonder how much that stupid green paint is costing me per gallon?

    I figure the green paint is being paid for by the people riding the bikes, with their taxes. My taxes are going for the things I prefer paying for. It's not a perfect way of looking at it, but my blood pressure is low.

    The one thing that irks me more than anything else is how the BLM gathered about half the feral horses off the open range, tax money is feeding them in dirt corrals for thirty years or more to the tune of a hundred million dollars annually... and the horses left on public grounds have repopulated to more than former levels. We would arrest and confiscate owned horses living in feral conditions but the bleeding hearts think symbols of the American west are necessary and they even think they are "protecting" them from abuse by keeping them living in misery.

    Ack... that stinkin' soap box got ahold. Nuff said.

    Total federal and state gasoline taxes and fees in California are about $1.51 a gallon. California gas tax is going up in July. Petroleum companies make around 5 cents profit on a gallon of gasoline. Retailers (gas stations) make about 4 cents a gallon.
    Petroleum and retailers combined 9 cents a gallon, government $1.51. Just presenting factual numbers. Not going any further with this. Draw your own conclusions.

    To tell the truth, I'd rather pay at the pump than with income taxes.

    Hey folks be careful not to "take the bait" getting close to a slip into politics. Don't need to have anyone banned. :fistbump:

    I don't drive to the store because I need a pack of cigarettes/latte/doughnut. We plan trips to town and walk for entertainment. Tax by the mile doesn't sound frightening.

    Of course I could be wrong.

    Because of growing consumer price sensitivity, it was difficult for retailers to adjust their prices in full cents. A one-cent price swing when gas is selling for 10 cents per gallon meant a 10% change. Over time, fuel retailers evolved to pricing at 0.9 cents. The reason is marketing.

    Should we be worried?:goingcrazy::goingcrazy::goingcrazy::goingcrazy::goingcrazy:

    Good morning everyone. 42 degrees here this morning, still too cold to plant. I need to do some light shopping today, groceries from BJ's club and some BBQ pellets, maybe replenish two rubs I use and some Kosmos chicken soak. I should water the plants in the bed of the Tacoma.

    Trash is out and ready for pickup. I usually put 3 coca cola's and 3 snickers bars out for the recyclers, they work as a team of 3. The recycling team will bring the big recycling bin back up the driveway to the garage doors. The regular refuse team, not so much. Guess which team does not get Snicker's and a Coke?

    Morning all:

    Finally got out walleye fishing last night, it opened Sat. 12:01AM, Jim caught 1 walleye that was 15 1/8" and I caught a 20" LM bass and a small striper. Not looking good, Jim went out alone on Sat. night and only got one also, hopefully it gets better when the Alewife's move in to spawn.:fingerscrossed:

    :pccoffee: Good Morning Porch Pals & Gals! Had a happy Mother's Day, with young son home to visit and help me make a nice dinner. Pool was at 84.9*, so we were in the pool - earliest time in the year I can remember.

    Seems like we have about twenty orioles fighting over the feeder this morning. We've also seen black headed grosbeaks and blue headed buntings trying to sneak a chance to feed. It's nuts this morning. Of course the hummingbirds and house finches are all over.

    Good morning current and future porchaholics. Grandma and mom always said "don't plant your flowers until after Mother's Day or they'll freeze". Well they got it wrong this year. I spend $300 on flats of annuals and a few tomatoes. Fortunately I only got the tomatoes in the ground. I was too tired to put in any annuals. Last night it dropped to 34 and there is heavy frost on the ground. I put 5-gal buckets over the tomatoes and brought all the flats of annuals in the garage. That was lucky. I'm looking forward to weather that will stay above 45 at night. Have a great day and enjoy life.
