There is something very calming about a good snow. Everything becomes so quiet, and my brain stops racing. I have vivid memories of being around 5 or 6 and swinging on a swing with dark clouds above, and all of a sudden, big flakes begin falling from the sky. I move forwards and backwards, and the snow seems to change direction (but it actually doesn't), and I think about the Apollo race to the moon. It's a darn shame when I encounter people that don't know what my Avatar is... Anyway, never worried about how cold it was outside. The point was to get out there early and go sledding in the morning and not stop till dinner time. The colder it was, the faster the sled seemed to go. Joy! Life was so simple back then.

Until I moved down here to AZ, I never realized how much time and effort winter weather was taking. In Wyoming the four seasons were: last winter, this winter, next winter and (with luck) four weeks of summer. In every case the severity was based on wind speed. Coldest temp seen on my porch (all of the red was in the bottom globe of the thermometer) - last number -45. Hours spent running my blower, shoveling, swapping on the snow tires, chaining up trucks (and cars), dealing with frozen gas lines, jelled fuel, jump starts, cutting wood, toting wood and stacking wood - it adds up to years of your life. I just never took notice at the time - but it ate up a lot of years........

For whatever reason, the Lander Valley was very calm - so noticeable that when I was looking to settle down (from living in a service truck) - natives and miners all pointed to that as a nice place to spend the weekends. It turned out to be true - very quiet. First September we had a 24" snow about 2 weeks in - and my fence posts had delicate 15" cones on top. Amazing. Later years, living in Casper - that snow would have settled in Nebraska or points east. It would drift to the ridge of my two story house.........Too much work.

A little something every chance we get.
:rain: Good Morning Porch Pals & Sue! For a change this morning, it's not raining, and it's almost 50*! But, the weather world has decided that it's pretty sure it should now rain here on Thanksgiving day. Well, don't need that! Haircut and errands today. Got 2 of 3 light controls fixed. Third one feeds a little transformer for 12V halogens, and the replacements didn't like it a bit; should be the same as an incandescent load. So, returned the extras, and have a plain old incandescent coming today.

@95SLE Tom, mine is busy thawing in a cooler in the garage. I don't have a rotisserie for the smoker (yet), so it just sits still. We normally just oil him up, give him some herbs as a light coat, and inject the heck out of him. I might try something a little fancier, but have some reading to do. I've had good luck with simple!

    Nice horse, Mike!

If you spend everything you make, you will always be poor.

It's not how much we have, but how much we enjoy that makes us happy.

Finding a good balance between these two sayings is the trick.

    Morning all:

    How true!
It amazes me how many people that can't really afford to have the bad habits have all the bad habits, and then come up short on rent and other normal living expenses, do I pity them, not one bit!

    Afternoon all:

o_O Just read this and found it interesting and something I never heard before.
Top fuel dragsters do not run 1,320 feet or 1/4 mile, they only run 1,000 feet because of the speed they can achieve.
Anyone else ever hear that or know it to be a fact?

Yes, they've been doing that for years. I think blowing up engines had a lot to do with it also.

That's been going on for several years. Too many tracks didn't have sufficient shut down area for the speeds they were attaining and too many tracks are landlocked and can't extend their shut down area.

1/8 mile drag races bore me, they are just quick reflex contests, why use the machines, why not just sit in chairs with a joystick to see who can react the fastest ?

I feel so lucky and fortunate the owners trust me working and driving these as well as with their lives
In the race cars. I am blessed as 99% of people don’t have this opportunity.

Well, in my profession I read something a few years into my career. As years went on, it got more relevant.

Doing a good job is like peeing in a dark suit.
It gives you a warm feeling but nobody notices.
