If I could add a love to this post, I would. The bank I worked at left the maintenance of the batteries, for the generator system, to the maintenance man, his job was an important one. I talked to him about measuring voltage, temperature, and specific gravity measurements of each cell, I did the maintenance on the generator system for our phone central office in Vietnam. He told me that he could tell the state of the cells by visual monitoring, which is incorrect. We had an outage and there was one bad cell in the battery bank. I was told the cell resembles Mt. Vesuvius when the cells came on line. after that he had 30 thermometers and 30 specific gravity testers. He tested 30 cells every day ensuring every cell was tested once a month.

When I was RIFed from my job, my boss called me later in the day and asked for my LAN sign in passwords. He also managed the LAN technicians. Sure am glad they retired me.

I have a very understanding wife. She changed our schedule for this Saturday so I would have the time to smoke a pork butt for part of a Christmas dinner at my sisters home.

Looks like a deserving grandchild will receive a great gift or one of the charities you are involved with will have a great give a way item. Besy of luck with finding a home for the PS5.

Good morning. We went down to the National Christmas Tree last night. Smaller overall display area and no yule log this year. The tree was ringed with tree toppers from years past. Best tree display I have seen so far. We did not go to the tree on the West face of the capitol, due to congress being is session last night, so we will miss it this year. I like this tree more than the national tree because of the handmade ornaments by school children.

Watching the progress of the approaching winter storm, looks like we are in for some brutal temps., but not too much snow in the forecast for our area, will see! I have the clothing but using the snowblower in temps. near 0 degrees definitely isn't on my fun to do list!

Few more details outside; secure the shade cover I put over the greenhouse (as a wind protection, more than anything), set the pool to run, and get the smoker set for Christmas - so I don't have to do it in the cold. Then, run back inside and wrap when it starts to blow after 12!

Another fly in the ointment. Read through the manual on the GenerLink last night, and sent off a question about solar connections to them - before I contact the City. "Typically, the GenerLink is not used with PV systems......" More to investigate....

 

Can you switch disconnect the solar?

 

Of course, and there is also a roof emergency shutdown key (for Fire Dept). I can completely disconnect if needed. And, I am "pretty sure" that it connects "after" the revenue meter, because they had to have a special one that reads power back to the utility. So, if utility goes down, there device would transfer, BUT I could still have solar. So, seems to me that I would just have to make solar shut down part of their process.

• After utility failure, turn off all breakers in house.
• Shut down solar disconnect to prevent any solar service, and backfeed.
• Connect generator, cords, and run until stable.
• Power back (indicated) circuits one at a time off generator power.
• (GenerLink runs until generator power is removed)
• Shut down generator when utility is present.
• Re-energize solar disconnect.

I think that would be how it would operate. I don't get solar if I am running under generator, but that is understandable.

I think stuff like this is why no one wants to be involved. I could "automate" the disconnects for a lot of money, and still need approvals and someone to do it. But, that's the kind of stuff I would expect on some full blown system. NOT an emergency generator connection.

 

Dementia is a tough road, but even moreso for those left behind. Prayers...

Installation a success.








Unfortunately I had to run by the gen lines. (Red and Black)
But, it’s like 1/2” away.
That is my only concern but I laid the induction wire against the CMP cable before I wrapped it
And it didn’t go off. Induction needs a complete circle around the wire anyway.
So it went in slick. I didn’t run the wires parallel to the black casing cause that contains induction wiring also.
So we will see. But it self tests ok…

 

Filled the rest of the gas cans when I got out of work.
Fired up the generator. All good.
My Nova is the reserve tank, and she's full of 93.

I like it. It's been so long that we had a daytime outage, I FORGOT that the PV shuts down with the Utility - it's required by code and built in:

In the United States (and most of the rest of the world), all inverters that back-feed the grid must conform with “anti-islanding” requirements. Anti-islanding simply means that the inverter stops grid-feed-in when the grid experiences abnormal conditions (frequency/voltage) and/or in the event there is a complete power outage. The purpose of this is to protect line workers or electricians who may be trying to make repairs to the grid. This is mandated for all grid-tie systems.

And I have no other backup other than the generator, so..... I sent it back to them to see where we go.

 

Took 2 hours to drop from 62 to 32. Currently 28 - dropped our low to 13 now. 2'nd ever Wind Chill warning (chill at 0*). And we lost the sunny forecast...
Found a windsock from the back out in the front.
Fire in the fireplace. Little space heater out here in the sunroom. Greenhouse is already in heat mode, garage should follow soon.

Good morning fellow Porchatonians!!

Screwy weather with this new storm - hit rain/sleet/snow on the way home just after noon yesterday. . At home we had 2" of snow on the ground - changed over to rain mid afternoon. Now the snow on the driveway is gone and it's 43 and raining. Just waiting for the floor to drop out of the temps and the freezing start.

I'm hoping to be able to get out to Lowe's before it starts to freeze up and get some things we need for the farm house bathroom project.

 

I've thought about an aircraft wing tank sump valve in the truck gas tank, for just such a purpose. WAY too scary to even think about drilling that hole, so jerry cans and Pri G it is.
