I haven't really looked at it - I think the latency issue is less since they are low orbit satellites but the cost is still up there. Our telephone company is putting in fiber...but who knows how long it will take to get to us. There is cable tv/internet along the main roads on both sides of us but with just5 houses on our road, the company wants us to pay $50k for the line.

I think the Satellite units are around $500 and the monthly cost is $50? We took a 9 day 1,500 mile RV trip thru Arizona and I saw these satellite units are almost every RV campground we stayed at. Good Luck

Yes, you don't have many choices. I'm not an expert on POTS (plan old telephone service) connections but I do know that one fix is to cook the line. If moisture got into one of the wires they can disconnect it at both ends and run enough amperage through it to heat up the wire and hopefully evaporate the water. This is temporary fix since if water got in before it will get in again. Satellite is expensive and does have the latency issues you mentioned. I have a satellite dish for my TV. About 6 days a year I have to remove snow to get to it work. I think living on a farm without having a neighbor that can see into your windows would be worth some internet hassles. Good luck and hope you can get a dependable connection soon.

Highway 88, Carson pass, over the Sierras. The plows are a little challenged getting it reopened. It’s one of the main arteries between California and Nevada

Compared to what you have, I would think the speed of the satellite system over DSL would make the latency a non-issue. The house I had before the divorce was a very similar situation to yours, except the cell coverage. We were even further from a DSL hub though.

I haven't kept up with satellite performance or costs but would expect to be worth it for the gains.

Thunderstorms and snow would give us fits a couple of times a year but it would usually last less than an hour for thunderstorms, wet snow may force manual clearing.

Update: Yesterday was my bone marrow biopsy. I did have a good friend drive me after all, as I anticipated a sore behind and was concerned about my ability to drive. I took my walker, and was so glad I smartened up on that count.
The procedure wasn't any fun (it took five of them in that small exam room with me for about a half hour), but that was a walk in the park compared to my butt (hip, actually) ache for the rest of the day and evening. I virtually could not put weight on my left leg at all, and i attribute that to damage to muscle tissue at the site of the biopsy. Anyone who has torn a muscle will nod in recognition of what I had going on yesterday.
Today was interesting, but not at all as difficult as yesterday. I did benefit from 5/325 hydrocodone/acetaminaphine, an effective pain killer, but I dislike the foggy head effect it gives me, so no danger of addiction for me on that stuff. The procedure was like 36 hours ago now, and I can say now with full certainty that I won't need any pain killer tomorrow. Would I do it again? you betcha, as long as it provides answers to my questions.
I was surprised (but not really) that I won't get the results of the test for a full month. Hell, if I even wake up a month from now I'll be surprised.

Good morning fellow Porchatonians!! Woke up to our DSL signal working without me needing to reboot the modem. We'll see what they come up with tomorrow when the tech is here. In the greater scheme of things it is just an annoyance. Stay safe!!

Glad to hear you are on the mend from the biopsy, Alan @wanna taco !!

The moisture in the line issue is a cause of many problems. We are fiber but had previously been copper based coaxial. We were having issues at one point and when the coax was disconnected at the house water poured out like it was a hose.

WOW That is a lot of snow. TY for sharing the pics.

Happy Sunday! Not much planned for today. We are going out for music and an early dinner tonight. When we get back, I am putting a pork shoulder into a wet brine and soak it for 24 hours to get ready for a Tuesday cook. Finished the bench restoration yesterday and going to find room in a shed for winter storage.

Good morning all! Little brisk out this morning but I'm going out for a motorcycle ride anyway. Above freezing and roads still decently clean of salt and cinders.

    Morning all:

Ken,I was recently looking at some pics. similar to the ones you posted about Carson Pass, but they were from somewhere in Canada. First thought was how the heck do they even know where the road is.

Another :fingerscrossed: and good luck with the biopsy Alan.

Snow road markers are generally used Carl.
But if the snow is too deep and they can't see the markers, its probably done with one's fingers crossed they don't go off the road . Glad PA doesn't get that much snow in our area.

    Afternoon all:

Every once in a while, I need a reminder that I'm old!
I had cut the oaks that came down into manageable lengths of app.4', or so I thought. I couldn't lift them so had to cut them in half.
those pieces were heavy enough, but I got them stacked and out of the way.
