Enjoy the long weekend Rob. The view looks peaceful.

Good morning. Health appointment #6 for the week. This has been a pretty busy week, health appointment wise. I do not know how I fit everything in yesterday but I did. Harris Teeter had pork shoulders on sale form97 cents a pound. I picked up my limit of 2 and had one sliced into steaks. No extra cost and I now have 9 pork steaks in the freezer. The other pork shoulder will be smoked up on Monday. Going to be another warm day today. Yesterday was in the mid 90's. My plan is to drink a lot of water and stay cool.

Not sure what to say, you are correct in many things you bring up. We do live in a bubble. Some animals adapt others don't. I believe there are many more factors in play as well. They were talking about different times / years on the radio yesterday that the heat this year isn't all that unpresidented. Being a snapshot in time at least one other time in resent history '88 was warmer and before that it was hotter in the 1930's meaning we have short memories and manipulation of data to push certain agendas. I believe weather is cyclical. Some of these agendas are being pushed to restrict travel, accept higher prices there by further restricting our travel and food choices based on ones means. Enough on that I don't want to go any further as to be construed as political. We have seen more animals in our city in the last 5 years in a populated area. We have had 3 moose, 2 mountain lion/ cougar and a bear in various neighborhoods. That doesn't include the fact the city has let out deer bow permits in the city from time to time. Coyote sightings are normal as well as wild turkeys and just this year in the neighbors tree we had a nesting hawk. In fact this little guy was trying to get in our patio door. I think he got pushed out of the nest early. I seen him I think a couple days later working on a squirrel.

    Good Morning Folks

Yoshi and I up before everyone else, as is the norm ... "mid-shifter syndrome."
Bit of a damp chill this morning, so we opted for a fire in the firepit.
Reckon the rain is on it's way back. Hopefully today is mostly dry, yesterday evening might be the best we've had this Summer, so thankful for that. :amen:

Have a great day all. :)

A little something every chance we get.
:pccoffee: Good Morning Porch Pals & Sue! Nothing but erranding and putz today. We moved into a tie for 4th with 20 consecutive days over 100. Forecast for next seven days is over 100. That would tie the all time 2011 record. Extended forecast calls for more, so this should be the all time.

I used to love the hot weather, and I probably would not mind so much if this wasn't continuous. Yesterday was "better" because the humidity stayed way down, and the pool was almost enjoyable when I finished my stuff. But it's too darn hot to just float, and that's a ridiculous concept!

Yeah, it's easy to see the big ones and some of them are doing well and increasing. Not moose, but some places they are doing better. We notice those that encroach on human habitat. But are they really more numerous, or just getting comfortable because they have to? It's the little guys that don't get noticed. 70% less insects, 3 billion fewer birds, and that's only in the States. Frogs and salamanders were daily fun when I was a kid. Now I have to look for places that have them. And heat? Maybe that can be misconstrued as political but it isn't if we are talking about reality. And I never mentioned it anyways, mentioning pesticides (One of those "several factors"), and I don't see reality as anything to vote for or against. So let's not go there.

The only thing constant on this 4 1/2 billion year old planet is change. Nothing remains the same. There are deserts where at one time there were inland seas. There are jungles where once was arid. There are arid lands where once there were jungles. There are mountains where the land was once flat. There have been thousands or maybe millions of climate changes. It has been way warmer than it is today and colder than today. The numerous ice ages this planet has experienced all ended due to global warming and these periods happened before man appeared on earth. Numerous species have become extinct over the last millions of years. Man can’t stop these large global changes. What we can do better than any other species is adapt. That is why we are still around today.

Well I can't agree that humans can't influence changes. We think of the planet as this too-vast-to-be-f**ked-with-thing, and yet we have done things that are easily seen. Remember the holes in the ozone? The planet is big... but we live in a very small space between the surface and elevations where complex life doesn't exist.

Take a medium ball point pen and draw a circle with it, sixty-one inches in diameter. Let the inside of the circle represent Earth. Think about that before you draw it. Do we live in the circle? No, we live on the surface of a sphere. How much atmosphere surrounds that sphere? How much of the atmosphere has breathable, survivable oxygen? The line itself, made with a medium ball point pen and surrounding a circle 61 inches in diameter represents the breathable atmosphere covering the sphere.

And you talk about changes and ice ages and cycles. Oxygen has disappeared from the planet in the past, causing probably the worst extinction event we know about. Certainly worse than the event that killed off the dinosaurs. Microbial life is all that survived. Any idea where we get our oxygen? You think the Brazilian rain forest? Yeah, some... but about 70% comes from phytoplankton in the oceans. Talk about a "keystone species". Really many species, but most depend on some critical necessities to survive.

Just informing anyone that cares to think about it. Some things I've learned through my college education, and recent continued study.

    Afternoon all:

Couldn't agree more Ken, my mindset also!
This is just North of me, it's a boulder field that was deposited by a glacier in Hickory Run State park, there are multiple smaller ones around but this is the one that's the best known, hard to believe that where we live was once covered in a thick ice sheet, AND, before that the same area was covered with water judging by the numerous aquatic fossils that can be found.

Just got done weed whacking the one side of the yard, not too bad, but figured it's time to quit when the sweat starts running in my eyes!

Travis I do not disagree with you. I did not say man can’t influence changes. Absolutely man can influence some changes. If we push the nuclear button that will be a big change, no more mankind, most animal life gone, there will be climate change , insect life will thrive and take over the world, there will be major changes to plant life. We purposefully cause changes due to pesticides and various chemicals we use. We have hunted and fished some species to extinction. Man caused the dust bowl. Humans cause lots of changes purposefully and inadvertently. And as far as climate change a topic I do not want to get into here, the science is not settled. If the science was settled there wouldn’t be 40 to 50 different climate models, there would be one.
The major changes that I mentioned we have no, zero, zilch control over. Volcanic activity no control over. Tectonic plate movement no control. Ocean temperatures and currents no control. Sun activity no control. The tilt of the earth, the wobble of the earth, the orbit around the sun we have no control over. And the list goes on and on. And every single thing I mentioned here affect and cause climate change. We do not know how much or how little they affect climate but we know there is nothing we can do about them. They also affect just about everything here on earth one way or the other and there ain’t anything we can do about them.
I’m a conservationist. I belong to, contribute to and physically work with a dozen or more conservation organizations. I do all I can to protect, preserve and conserve our natural resources and wildlife , flora and fauna. But there is only so much we can do. We just have to accept there is much beyond human control. Do what we can for the short time we are here.
Again the biggest thing we have going for us as humans is our ability to adapt , no other species has that ability to the extent that we do.

    Back again!

Well, I was already dirty and sweaty, so went at it again with the weed whacker this afternoon and did another lawn edge, the sweat is pouring off of me right now!

I think the guys that live near the super volcano in Yellowstone, or the one they are now talking about in California should move!
Never heard of the one they are now talking about in CA., but they are saying it's another super volcano that is showing signs of a possible eruption at some point.

Well we are very good at breeding and surviving due to being spread out all over the globe. That's for sure. I don't see that we've ever been truly tested by something that threatens us all. Of course adaptability, I think as you mean it, has to pretty much include a recognition of a problem as well as a willingness to work together toward any solution. In that regard I'd have to say I'm not real confident. We are far too tolerant of risk... and I say that as someone that plays poker to win.
