@Travlr we have a tool supplier called acme "tool crib of the north". They have a display of individual bits, not cheep, not a set but they are some of the best bits I found. They rarely broke for what I did but I had multiple sets that the small bits up to quarter inch were all broken on my work service truck. I'll be running by that store today or tomorrow and I'll send you the info. I didn't like them for convenience because I had to carry an extra drill in besides an impact and other tools and materials. If I was hauling solid core doors through a building it got to be to much. But if I didn't need much more than my impact and a drill not a problem. I liked to keep it to what I could carry in a small tool bag. These are the standard kind and not the quick change kind that seem to be brittle and fracture easy.

Good morning. Interested in American made drill bits too. I have a set of Dewalt and Craftsman drill bits that work well. I have had the Craftsman set for close to 30 years. It is missing some bits from the set, but I still make do with them. I looked at the price of some of the American sets and they were quite expensive.

Today is the gym, pick up some groceries, mark the sprinkler heads for the lawn maintenance company, and guitar practice. Getting a late start due to sleeping in.

    Good Morning Porch Folks .

Do you have a Graingers near you Travlr? If you look on their online catalogue they have a lot of different bits to choose from. Plus you can get a description of their strength. Worth a try. I have DeWalt and Kobalt that are great for wood but not so good with metal. I have some bits from my work career that are good quality but sizes are varied.

    Have a good day all.

I don't know what kind of metal. The holder doesn't say. They work well in metal. The larger bits have a smaller bit to start.

They do. I searched the site but I didn't see them. I'll go by and take a picture of the display. They have some sets of American made bits but are around 99. Bucks. The ones I liked are rated for stainless steel and limited breakage. These guys carry some of the best stuff for contractors and professional use, one can find. They have some techs that can work on industrial machinery in manufacturing plants.

The front yard sprouted too fast with rain, so I got to it. Half the yard was mowed when I heard the "SNAP!" The blade engagement cable failed. The riding mower is 23 years old but straightforward to repair and keep going. YTD with a Kohler (annual oil & filter changes).

Loose blade, tossed on some new ones. I'll sharpen and balance the older heavy blades later. All back together, the mower is working great, but halfway through the job, I noticed only cut half of the 42" deck. The blade fell off! Found the blade and bolt, a thinner blade meant to bolt bottomed and stipped. Oof.

Grrr, it's time to pull the deck again and put in new spindles (usually, I get about five years out of them, so I had extras for "that day").

I'm just glad I am working out, as getting the deck out for repairs is getting harder. I hope today isn't leg day at the gym, as I was doing lots of squats and one-arm side planks to get the deck out and replaced. Good workout!

The weather is getting cooler; it's time to go camping!

Chicago-Latrobe or Hertel are my go-to brands.

Drill Bit Set: Jobber Length Drill Bits, 29 Pc, 118 °, High Speed Steel-Bright/Uncoated, Standard, Straight Shank, Series 150D $185
    https://www.mscdirect.com/product/details/81184863

Machinist set that I probably paid $90 for in 1990

How I keep my drill bits sharp
    https://www.drilldoctor.com/shop/skill-level/advanced/500x/

Dad could sharpen by eye, and his bits cut steel like butter. I never learned the right fitness of edge and clearance, but good luck with the Drill Doctor.

The drill guide will help you drill straight, reducing the chance of breakage. One side is flat, the other with a "V" for drilling tubing.

That is a quote from the Canadian tv comedy The Red Green Show. The show is hilarious. It’s primarily aimed at guys but I think everyone finds this show funny. If you want to check it out you can find some full length (half hour) shows on YouTube. I watch it sometimes while I’m riding my stationary bike and my wife can hear me laughing all over the house.
