Nothing derogatory to be said there. Wife worked with a lot of Doctors in her career and I have seen quite a few in my day. Just curious :D

Lenses are plastic. For those of us that live near cities and travel freeways and interstates on a daily basis, clouding is a big issue. When you drive on these types of roads it is like driving through a sand blaster. If you look at the jersey wall on the left lane there is usually almost a 1/2 inch of sand that builds up and the sand came from all the lanes, bouncing off vehicles till it makes its way to the wall. This happens over time. Usually between the 5th and 7 years of ownership of the vehicle the lenses are cloudy from the sand and if you have a front air dam on a car you will notice the paint being stripped off. It has happened to me on numerous cars. Waxing or sealing your paint is decent protection but the sand eventually wins.

My sister's headlight lenses have started to have fine spider web type cracks. In another 3 years they will need to be replaced. Her truck is a 2008 model year.

    @Sprig : Happy birthday

Last day aboard ship, wife is packing (she doesn’t trust me to pack stuff). We arrive at the port of LA tomorrow morning and fly home. Just relaxing enjoying my birthday. It’s going to be tough leaving all this. No more being served and waited on. No one cooking unbelievable meals and cleaning up afterwards. No stateroom steward getting us what ever we need. No more great entertainment at night and various musical groups all over the ship. Back to reality

    Evening all:

Things are picking up, saw 5 deer today, and my buddy saw 3, then saw a buck cross the road on the way to town and saw 2 more buck cross the same road this evening.
The other day we saw a buck along the road driving in to hunt, then saw another buck cross the road on the way out, now just need to get one in range while hunting, at least it seems like they are starting to move and that the rut is probably starting.

Yay! Now, right place, right time! :infantry:

Thank you all again for the comments about headlight clouding and yellowing on our acrylic lenses. Pretty much two camps, and I'm in both!
    1. I used the kits, they were great, but I got rid of them before I could make any judgement on longevity.
    2. I used the kits, they were great, but lacked long term UV protection, so I did this....

I have the stuff to continue until it's time to replace my sons lenses. I have also watched the UV protectant PEEL itself away from my new LKQ replacements on the Taco! We are NOT short on UV here in CenTex! I have no problems committing to a restoration/upkeep process.

I worked in the lighting industry for over 35 years. I watched polycarb, then acryllic try to replace glass. Poly is a failure - it hates heat and UV, and loses any focal properties in doing so. Acrylllic is a blessing, as you can force more optic performance into the lens, and really change what a fixture can do. It lasts a long time, but still, heat and UV will break it down. But unless you have a 10 year warranty, it will outperform, and be cheaper than anything but flat glass. Which was the only glass we still used by the time they got rid of me. If you've ever watched glass made, can you imagine a Taco headlight in glass? Weight, cost, fragility due to shape.....

Here is the main focus of an article from AAA I have attached.

Most of today’s cars use halogen reflector headlights, which have covers typically made of plastic with a protective coating to prevent scratching and sunlight damage. Exposure to sunlight breaks down this coating, causing yellowing and clouding that noticeably lessens the headlight’s ability to provide enough light on dark roadways. Depending on where and how the car is used, headlights can begin to show signs of deterioration within three to five years before requiring maintenance from a professional mechanic.

What To Do About Cloudy Headlights | AAA Automotive

You can all laugh a "qualified mechanics", but the world works that way. We just know stuff.

And therein lies the entire flaw in the system. Design for esthetics instead of function and eye appeal.

I'm gonna make a few calls. I wonder if there's a place to buy the backing plate so all I'd have to produce is the lens?

Have you pulled your headlights? Ever? It's not a "plate", it is a complex formed shape. These are not M-57's. Done.

I know what they are and how they are formed. Sorry you are offended by thinking out loud.
