We have radiant in floor heating in the basement (concrete poured over the lines) and main level of the house (Lightweight concrete poured over the lines) and radiant baseboard heat on the 2d floor. The boiler heats the water for the heating system and also for the water heater. The water heater just maintains the temperature after the water is delivered from the boiler.

A little something every chance we get.
learn something new every day.... gas hot water heater has no such animal.... pretty sure code here would require a plumber putting it in. I will ask next time they are here.

and my phrase of a Google question gets:
Expansion tanks are required by code in all new water heater installations in closed systems. A closed water system uses check valves, backflow prevention devices, pressure-reducing valves, or other devices on the supply line to prevent water from being sucked back into the municipal water supply.Nov 30, 2023

Mine is NOT a closed system ....

That's interesting. Pretty sure mine's not closed either. So do you really need one?

The answer is probably it depends. Any expansion in the system has no where else to go without one, so you "could" suffer other damage. I do not have that experience, or expertise, but I understand the premise.

We have a contract service for Heat/AC/plumbing, so next time they are here (always want to sell us something), I will see what they have to say. I like them, but their service guys are somewhat obligated to see what they can upsell.

Just to put it out there... if it does what I think it does, it has a rubber diaphragm in it to take any sudden surges in pressure and make them less stressful. Similar to the pressure tank on a well system. Well tanks need to be bled out once in a while so the bladder doesn't rupture or become waterlogged, which means they don't work. Is there any kind of bleeding system on the expansion tanks? That might keep it from having to be replaced so often.

Hot water and radiators. Generally not steam as the domestic hot water is supplied by the same boiler that serves the radiators.

    Evening all:

In my case, the furnace provides hot tap water and hot water for the baseboard heat.

I have never had one. Both in Arizona and Tennessee. Maybe it is related to hot water heat.

Dumb thought, there is a difference between a BOILER and a HOT WATER HEATER. Not that codes would know.... but if you have a closed system, at least I can understand the fundamental.

Never had a boiler in any house I've lived in (as an adult - don't know about as a kid). But then again mostly have lived in AZ, NV, Southern CA, and SC. Heat pumps.

Sorry. Have had some great delivery guys and some not so good ones....

We got a new boss a couple of weeks back. Today he had his first safety meeting. Among the topics was the mandatory lunch break that none of us take. He says we need to take it right in the middle of our busiest part of the day. Nobody's happy, nobody wants to lose customers or listen to those that are pissed off because we couldn't make it there in time (I'm an LTL truck driver).

I'm pretty sure retirement just moved up from April to Feb. I'm so tired of this shit.

It is a plumbing code thing here in my county. It is supposed to control any surge in water pressure due to the hot water expanding and possible causing a hot water heater failure. Yes, there is a drain valve on the expansion tank. All new hot water heater installations have to be inspected by the county and the install has to meet code. Just another way county can increase fees. I doubt if the fees cover the inspector's time.

Good morning. Sad day yesterday. My buddy Amigo, family cat, passed. He was 19 and a half years old and was a good friend. He has been getting worse the last half a year and yesterday he coud not climb out of his bed. We took him to the vet with the reality of putting him to sleep but, true to an Orange Tabby, he passed on his own terms in the vet's office.

Yea, losing a pet can be tough. We lost our rescue cat over 2 years ago and we just can't bring ourselves to get another. 19.5 years is a good run.

My condolences on your loss. One of our little guys just required emergency surgery for a blocked urethra due to crystals in his urine. He's only 3 and the sweetest cat I've ever had so we opted to get him the surgery. Following that he needed to go to a 24 hour vet hospital for monitoring and blood work every 8 hours to watch for kidney damage. Looking good and back home now but more money than I've paid for several cars in my life.
