    Pool - take two.

An old single-speed pump costs about $1500 with installation. New VS will set me back $6000. Ouch!Pl

In 2021, Single-speed pumps were banned in favor of the Variable Speed units. Brushless motors and electronics have advantages but
increased cost. In theory, pumps should last longer (no ozone vent holes, less likely to get filled with fire ant nests).

The catch is the pool controller needs to tell the VS when it is in spa mode vs. normal filtration mode. We've had a twenty-year controller board for the pool, and Hayward obsoleted them. When the remote died, thankfully, I was able to luck out in finding the correct one (three different firmware versions, not compatible with each other, so the base and remote needed the same version, which was a significant headache for service, so they obsoleted and went with new boards with Bluetooth pairing for remote function, and can handle more gadgets). I want to turn the pump on and off!

    New VS Speed pump installed.

    upload_2024-1-13_8-35-33.png

Not so fast, as the VS speed pump needs a new control board! I have it wired for low flow, but to use
spa, I need high flow for jets (the pool heater has a flow sensor in it; too low kicks off the burner).

    upload_2024-1-13_8-32-57.png

I want the house in tip-top shape when we sell, so I'll bite the bullet and install the new fancy stuff.

For those with pools, the VS pump is a 2021 Federal Law (it's been a California requirement for years).
My low cost (Texas Co-Op electrical at 4c/KWH) works out to a 25-year payback, but the pump and board
will need replacements long before then. Califonia, with 24c/KWH, would be a four-year payback.

You can still buy the old single-speed pumps, but they can not be commercially installed. 2021 Law affects the 2hp size I use.

Maybe I just need to skip the control board and buy a Dutch wood-fired hot tub!

Home made? At church next weekend we're having a soup-er bowl fundraiser my wife volunteered us for a large crock but we're not that great for creativity on soups. She is thinking about making tortilla soup using canned soups . I would like a taco soup. If anyone a good recipe and would share it I would appreciate that. You can PM me if you don't want to have this thread go this direction.

This is my favorite soup. We're making it tomorrow with beef tongue instead of lamb. It's really good with turkey, too. Sounds like you like Mexican soups. I have a good one of them too.

Thanks @Travlr I like just about anything that doesn't have fish or sea food in it. If it swims I don't eat it. Being Catholic, Fridays consist of cheese, beans, veggies or fasting.
Last year someone brought a great bean soup. But I've never reconststuted beans/

:pccoffee: Good Morning fellow freezing Porch Pals & Sue! Was 27* when I got up, now 25*. Chili in the crock pot since last night, can light the fireplace any time, and the heat pump in the sun room proves once again that it is a much better air conditioner. I'll get the little space heater in a bit.

Yep, self inflicted with a little help from my dear mother. She used to make lutefisk, what the hell! The house would stink for 2 days and the texture was enough to make you gag if the smell didn't.
Sorry @Travlr I haven't gotten the hang of multi quotes yet. I am a little weird though if salmon is really cooked good I'll eat that every few years and I have tried calamari a couple times. Long Horn steak house has good salmon.
