:pccoffee:  sixtys/wannabes/ice cubes (east)/fire eaters (west). It's been a tough winter for so many people, us included; my wife Carol is improving daily, although she did pick up a headcold along the way -- which she gave to me, ugh. If that's the worst of our woes, I will feel lucky. We got some snow from that recent storm but nothing like the folks just a few miles to our south, many of whom are not accustomed to seeing that much white stuff at one time. Further south there have been heavy storms and tornados. And our hearts go out to all of those folks in the LA area. I know there are a lot of controllable factors that coulda/shoulda/woulda made the fires less likely or at least less devastating, but I can't help but feel for the people who lost a lifetime's worth of family mementos, photos, and other irreplaceable memories in the flames. That is a huge loss that no amount of insurance can cover.

I'm sitting here cracking myself up trying! The best I can to is get about halfway through the "6" before my foot just turns hard left!

That sounds like what my wife had and I now have. No fever thankfully, but sinuses are inflamed and there is some chest congestion. Carol feels better but can't shake the cough. I'm only about 5 days into it so I have a ways to go yet. Dayquil/Nyquil is my go-to, taking half doses at this point. I also take vitamin D3 daily, and daily zinc during the cold season, so maybe that is helping keep this cold a bit less severe.

I had the s**t scared out of me too during my wife's recent illness, and all kinds of terrible dreams. They've pretty much passed now but I still shake when something reminds me of those dark days. I swear I have a mild case of PTSD.

:annoyed:Good Morning Porch Pals & Sue! Too many cooks spoiling my surgery stew! Woke up with a huge headache at 4 am. Fought with the CPAP to try and get comfortable. Gave up, got up early for me, just to get some coffee and acetaminophen. Promptly took a 2 hour chair nap, and feeling human again. Just go off the phone with yet another nurse to "verify my information one more time"! At lease she gave the correct arrival and surgery times (I had three different ones yesterday!) Today is just more make ready stuff and football tonight.

    And there she is!

Everyone keeps telling me knees are worse than hips. For me, I hope so! For you, speedy recovery, and ask them for pool therapy as soon as you can! Happy PT to both of us!

I need a knee replacement as well, however, I want one strong enough I can use to run on ("press-fit" vs. "cement-on"); I was all set to have it done a little over a year ago back in New Hampshire, and then I got the prostate cancer diagnosis and put it off to deal with that first. I now live in Maryland and so far the three knee sturgeons [sic] I've talked with have all said, "No way, maybe if you were a twenty-one year old professional athlete, but you're nearly seventy." I have some big deliverables this week and next week my schedule is fairly light; time to start shopping for a doctor!

Meanwhile, just rain here, but the most colorful radar I've seen in quite a while. Wish I could send it to LA!

They had live entertainment tonite. A fellow on the steel drums. Spend a lot of hours at the bar. It's almost like Cheers where everyone knows your name. As January goes on more friends arrive and the party begins.

    How times change...

I had a guy come over today to bid taking three limbs off an old apple tree. He pulls up in a shiny eighty thousand dollar plus pickup and approaches like he's doing me a favor allowing me to bask in his magnificence. Ultra-confident and socially cool, he suggests the tree be taken down completely. I tell him I like the tree, so we'll just keep it... but what about the limbs? He doesn't miss a beat. No doubt in his mind that the old dude will swallow and he'll be making a payment on something new he's financing to make his ego swell. All for the low, low price of two hundred dollars a limb... three limbs... six hundred bucks total.

And he gets upset and thinks he can verbally b**ch slap me into compliance when I snicker and say no. Insulted, he starts itemizing how all of his equipment is expensive and he can't work for peanuts.

    But times have changed, right?

I remember when a guy would pull up in a well used truck with ladders and tools and if it took less than an hour he'd do it on the spot with a pole saw. And I'd pay his asking price gladly and tip him $50. And then we'd shoot the bull for a few minutes and we'd part friends for life. And he'd go home and kiss his wife and hug his kids and eat meatloaf and pay his bills by helping people and feel good about doing an honest days work.

And it seems like the new thing happens more and more. Kids living in McMansions and expecting the boomers to pony up merely because they want. And I can't help wondering if these young guys are seeing me as an easy mark because my hair is now white. Or is it me, and I have lost my social skills and become "set in my ways", including expectations? Or is it just that the public is so enamored of bling that they think the people driving expensive trucks are more skilled or somehow better to hire? Or again, is it me and I place too much value on the dollars I own so fleetingly?

Now I'm on a mission. I've been wanting a polesaw to trim trees. I'll get it done a limb-per-day at a time and have a new tool to accumulate rust and clutter my garage. Life is good.

Well said! I’ve gone through this several times. Cool dude drives up in his F350 4x4 and quotes me a huge price. Then if you hire the guy he sends over a couple guys he pays minimum wage and they do the work in an hour and I’m thinking wtf, I got screwed.
And be careful if you do the trimming yourself. Tree trimming can be dangerous work, especially for us older guys. I know several people who have been injured. Wife told me today about someone who was helping a relative trim a large tree. A large branch fell on his head and killed him. He leaves a wife and 10 children. So just be extra careful Travir.

    Good Morning Porch Folks :hattip:.

6 or 7years ago I needed my ash 30 foot tall, in front of the house taken down (ash borer killing it off). A neighbor was having their tree taken down so I asked if he could stop by and give me a price. He looked at the tree, looked at the girth of the trunk and said "How is $200 sound" .he got the job as most tree outfits locally were getting $850 to $1000 a tree. He came next day with his son, and took the tree down. I tipped him an extra $100 for the good job they did cleaning up . No fancy truck or equipment, just willing to do the job at sa reasonable price. He charged by the size of the tree as he charged a neighbor who had a bigger tree more money but still a fair price...$400.

I have several stories with contractors selling jobs and had one even try the scare tactic of if you don't get it done soon repairing the damage will cost a lot more. They like to prey on seniors, especially ladies.

Have a great day folks and be safe :fistbump:

I would normally jump at Pool Therapy but the walk from the parking lot to the pool is more steps than I would care to do. I will ask about it though, even though water and the stitched up incision may not make that therapy viable.

When you get back to the porch you will have the first 3 mandatory fills of the cooler and you will be on lawn duty all summer. Enjoy your winter vacation.:);)

    Those tacos look delicious.

Good morning. A chilly 19 degrees in the back yard this morning. Going to get a haircut today, I do not like it when hair is over the top of my ears. Probably going to have meat loaf for dinner tonight. My wife and I are in the process of rearranging the pots and pans in the kitchen and should finish up today.

Did a Sous Vide, hot water, cook on some NY Strip steaks yesterday. Had them in the water at 124 degrees for four hours and came out pretty tasty. Browned them up in a ridged cast iron skillet. They looked great, interior temp at 135 degrees, both inside and out and tasted really delicious but lacked that charcoal flavor. Not bad for my first cook. My next steak cook will be for 10 hours and finish off on live fire. I would have done live fire yesterday but there is too much snow in the grilling area.
