I wonder if stucco houses survived better, or tile roofs? It would be interesting to be a fire investigator and tour that area.

Again. No words. It's "only" a house, I suppose.

Wife asks, if they walk, pay off loan remainder with insurance, they still own the land? Must be.

They know their loan will be paid off and they will be paid for contents of the house, but they do not know if they even break even. They still own the land and will have to pay property taxes. Hopefully greatly reduced since the property value is zero right now. They can’t sell the property currently since no one will buy it, and it may be years if then til anyone will buy. Then if they can sell it due to f ing California government bureaucracy and “green” regulations it will take at least 2, 3 or more years before anything will be built. Who wants to buy a piece of land that it will be years before you can build. And permitting costs will exceed $100,000.
    The victims here are screwed.

Maybe they can doze off what's left of the house and use the sewer and water hook-ups to rent space for tiny houses. There might be a market for temporary spaces for a while.

Stucco and tile roofs do better but what happens is embers get under the eves where there is exposed wood and under where the house meets the foundation which is wood and fire ignites. Also burning trees and other things like burning fences, sheds and other things fall against or through the house and start fires. It’s insane.

Got about 3 or 4 inches of snow yesterday eve and thru the night, I just came in from shoveling. At least it was dry fluffy snow and not heavy wet or I would have gone to the storage bay to get the snow blower, lol.

:( Afternoon Porch Pals and Sue! Can't say good after all that fire stuff. Man, that is tough. Probably not in anyone's recent lifetime has there been fires like that in the city. It's like expecting hurricane winds and flooding in the Smokey Mountains. Pretty soon, insurance won't insure anything. I'll stop there. Make some thoughtful contributions to these folks - there are lots of good avenues to do so. Help over all else.

Today is just not going right. PC speakers quit and I narrowed it down to the motherboard. tried a few tricks but nothing worked. PCI audio card for $44 or a used motherboard for $92. Ordered the card and it will be here tomorrow. I have to sacrifice a PCI SATA port card to get the sound going. There is such a thing as a PVI port stacker that might be useful but that can wait. I have a Zoom meeting next week and I need this PC for the meeting. On a positive note, the door lock to the garage is fixed.

    Afternoon all:

That's a sad sight to see Sprig, and something that no one should have to experience, unfortunately many do. :(

    I had posted this before!
My mother had a car ins. policy through Lawn Mutual, she paid the yearly premium and shortly after received another bill. The agents explanation was that they had taken losses and could assess their policyholders to make up for those losses, I think it had something to do with having Mutual attached to the company name that allowed them to do that.
Comes under the heading of "live and learn', wonder if any of their agents ever told their customers that that could happen, I'd say the chances of being told that were "ZERO"!

You have hurricane insurance but not flood insurance, the flooding is caused by the hurricane, claims denied. How do people do that for a living and sleep at night.

Just finished caulking the backsplash tile to granite counter joint. Holy shit. I can't hunker like that.

Tearing out old - PLUMBERS PUTTY (WTAF???) - was good and bad. My DeWalt oscillating cutter worked awesome, but still. Blades, dental, picks, etc. 90% alcohol. Vacuums, compressed air, heat gun, etc

Exactly one full tube of the most expensive kitchen caulk and a bad neck later, it looks pretty good.

The oddest thing besides the putty in the joint was how FINALLY after 46+ years of home slavership I can FINALLY run a good caulk bead. Must be time to hire stuff done! Hahahahahahahahaaha

My FIL went through all this after the Scripps Ranch Fire in 2007. One pissed off Marine. He loved USAA (based in San Antonio) at the time, but they didn't pay anything. He had documents and receipts and kept everything at a friend's house well away. USAA dragged their feet. State Farm showed up, wrote checks to cover temporary houses and house contents, and got his neighbors back on their feet. We were worried about him showing up with an M1 Carbine to let them know how he felt. Livid doesn't begin to describe it.

The fire marshall set up cameras on his street, knowing that the canyon behind him, with its eucalyptus trees and wind, was an inferno heading their way. The footage was eye-opening. His house was stucco, tile roof and retrofitted eve vents to prevent embers. Well prepared. The fire was intense, and the neighbor's car tires caught fire. His house was still standing as neighbors' houses went up. As a kid, I remember reading Fahrenheit 451. The camera recorded everything; the final image was his house ignited from the inside due to heat.

Nothing was left; his pool was void of water, and concrete blasted and fell into the void. Cooper pipes melted inside the slab (about 1000F). Riding out fire storms is a huge eye-opener; you don't but get out of there. Sadly, a neighbor was the lone fatality. She had gone back for her cat and didn't survive. The cat showed up a week later when they were overlooking the house.

Words escape me. His nanny HOA (half the homes survived) dragged their feet on his plans to rebuild. He was older but wanted the master bedroom downstairs. After a year of denial, he gathered his friends and took over the HOA board. He approved all pending home plans, disbanded the HOA, and finally rebuilt his house the way he wanted. Ed Ernst was a Marine, but it took him four years to regain his house.

I hope State Farm comes, though (lots have changed since then). USAA is one company I'll never use.

Moral: If a fire is coming, evacuate. The Poway Fire Department posted the video on YouTube; his house was on Oakfort. I cannot find the video, but fire swept up that canyon.

What protein drink are you not supposed to drink?? Curious minds want to know :anonymous:

Oh, no. So sorry for them. Hope they get made whole again by their insurance company

 ALL insurance is a scam!!!!

    :(

One of the houses that survived was stucco with a metal roof. It was the only one in it's area that survived. It was designed specifically to withstand fire.

It's a 3'rd party group provided by the huge Ortho chain here. Farmed out. My cardiologist seems to share my opinion that's it's 3rd party junk science monitored by "health care professionals" who track my progress and pain (in the ...) "Take care of your patients without bothering you or your staff!" They aren't even allowed to access this site at the heart hospital. But, here you go.

Sorry for your friend’s daughter family situation; I watched some of the news videos on TV and listen to the man/woman in charge responses to their questions of duty, I feel sad for the citizens who are being lost in their darkest time.

    :hattip:Good Morning Porch Folks .

So sad to hear and see what is happening in SoCal. So many insurance issues with claims and people having to struggle to get by. But one of the worst problems are the people claiming to be collecting money for people that lost everything...most are scammers keeping the money . Not to advertise but The Salvation Army is one of the safest to donate to. 'Nuff said..

Have a good Sunday and be safe all.

Afternoon reading your post Tom, I hope your Dad got some restitution from USAA. I need to look at my insurance when I get home because I have USAA . Have never had any claims so I haven't had any issues. Problem is when you have an issue you need an insurance company to come through for you
    Wishh your Dad the best.

    Take care and be safe.
