Good morning everybody. I'm glad to see that the group is still going strong.

I just got back from working on the redwood coast for a month or so. I towed my Casita with the Tacoma, camping out wherever we were working, and most places didn't have wi-fi or even very good cell phone reception. I got so I liked the peace and quiet.

We're supposed to be having a drought out here but it rained on us almost every day. I think I have moss growing on my north side.

Now maybe I can start working on being retired again. LOL...I'm going to work real hard at it.

 Good to see you back on here. Those Casitas are nice. Going "off the grid" is what I like about fishing and hunting trips up here in Summer. Love telling everyone "I'll call when we get back in cell coverage." Turn off the phone, throw it in the glove box and :D

Yup...the Casita is nice. The older I get the more I like those creature comforts like a hot shower at the end of the day and not having to cook over a campfire. When I'm working I'm usually quite a ways from any kind of town and having a refrigerator and a dry bed is just downright civilized. :) We still follow some of the old traditions though...like keeping our after work beer cold in the creek. Don't know why but it just tastes better that way.

As far as being without a computer or a phone, the first day or two is a little strange but after that it's no problem at all. Some of the younger guys seem to have a little trouble adapting to life without communication but most of us do just fine.

Our crews range in size from two to twenty, depending on what we're doing ,but most of them are just four men. There are usually a few new guys every year and that gives us old farts somebody to pick on.:D

We have company radios in case somebody gets hurt and we need an evac. We all carry a list of the gps coordinates for the evac LZs but they very seldom get used and that's the way we like it.

On the picking on the new guys ... Some of us old retired from active duty guys now working civil service in the squadron actually got talked to for "picking" on the young active duty airmen. Political correctness run amuck. Kid that brought it on ended up getting booted, but still, when he should have been told to "shut up and get outta my sight," his concerns had to be considered and we got talked to about it. Still leaves a bad taste in my mouth when I think about it. :puke:

And creek cooled beer ... ABSOLUTELY ... Can't beat beer cooled in the creek. Outta the reefer will never taste that good. ;)

    Evening all.
    Made the week.
Actually had a pretty ok day.
The Forman and myself were having a coughing contest.
I called him a candy ass cause he took a day off this week.
I'm a little better but I'm just wiped right now.
Belated welcome to the 80 year old ass kicker.

ECU won't be here till middle of next week Charlie.
    So we will just wait.
Very sorry to hear of the incident. Like others have said just let them take a
    Injection or something.
Unfortunately your not allowed to pass quickly and quietly in the US. They will have courts and lawyers helping you stay in pain as long as they can. Your not allowed to pass on with your own request.
They will tie you up and force feed you and keep 24 hour eyes on you. And have experts talk to you to make you change your mind because being in agony is better for you because you are alive.

YES IT'S ALL ABOUT THE RACING!!!!!!!!!!

Picking on the new guys is traditional in my line of work but I will admit that it's not as rough as it used to be. When I started in the woods the jokes and pranks were rough and anything short of actual physical injury was usually okay. The bosses were in on it too and as long as it didn't slow down production or cause them any paperwork they didn't care how badly we tormented the greenhorns. Those days are gone.

Good workers are hard to find anymore, especially good younger workers. Those of us (stubborn old-timers) whose work ethic is still firmly rooted in tradition need to realize that times have changed. We don't have to like it, and we don't, but sometimes you have to change with the times. Gradually, grudgingly, we've changed.

Young guys (and increasingly, gals) who want to work at logging are treated a little better now. Don't pay any attention to that crap on AxMen. All that screaming and yelling is just for tv.
It's still a hard job and the terrain and weather are still a challenge but, as a rule, people get treated better. Not perfect, just better. The pranks are still fun, just more imaginative and easier on the body and soul than they used to be.

And on the creek-cooled beer...we have to be careful when we stash it. If the rigging crew or the truck drivers find it we might be short a can or two at the end of the day.

Glad you made it through OK Mike.

Agreed it's a shame gov't won't allow one to go out on their own terms under those circumstances. In a right world you could bring together friends and family, celebrate a good life, then go out with some dignity. But things are far from right or making sense any more. :(

Now, go take a double shot of something and get some sleep. Let your body focus it's energies on fighting the sickness. ;) Feel better soon.

:( Sorry Capt Folks in pain should be allowed to "take care" of themselves when the pain gets too bad. It's easy for folks to say "NO", but unless you are walking in those shoes, you should just shut up. That said, it should only be YOUR decision
