    Evening all:
That's crazy with the John Deer Mike. They have an excellent reputation, and with only 19 hrs. you would think they would take care of a problem.

I saw something interesting today. Stopped at a local boat dealer to STS. The mechanic was installing a lower unit that they had just rebuilt. He then fired it up, and you could hear a Pfff, Pfff, pfff, and gas was spraying out the front of the motor. A 3/4x3/4" piece broke out of the block that was apparently a stop for the shift leaver, or something related to the transmission shaft. It went right through to the combustion chamber.
They were talking about epoxying it back in place. That doesn't sound like a good idea to me at all, especially with the combustion pressure that will be pushing against it.
Here's what that customer may be facing; he just had a lower unit rebuilt, but he may also need a new block. :(
The mechanic that was doing the work is very good, I doubt that the damage was caused by him but somehow could come under the heading of chit happens.
I would only assume the customer won't be too happy.

Thanks for the link Charlie. I can work with that. The reuse intake gasket ring expanded enough I can't reinstall it. Really interesting. Valves were ok. Think I'm going to just install new gaskets and let her go after I check the decks.

    Susan:
I hope to set up a meeting next week with a team that will design and install a new kitchen for me. I have had 4 smaller projects completed by one of the members on the team so I am familiar with her work. What I like is that I should be able to be a gopher and help offset the costs of the clean up and disposal fees.

I need to work really hard this weekend to develop a realistic budget for all the major components of the project.

Good luck with the project. We redid our kitchen a couple of years ago; it's a major operation, especially if you intend to continue living in the house while it's being done.

We're fortunate to have a business nearby that makes custom cabinetry, plus they coordinate the whole thing among their people, electricians, plumbers, the whole lot. So that kind of hassle was taken care of for us. Even so, it was an ordeal. She likes this counter, he likes that one. He insists on this door style, she can't stand it. It took months to get the whole thing planned and scheduled. Then we had to basically abandon half of our house for the duration of the project. When people ask me how it went I say, "well, we're still married!":p

It didn't put the fire out but it slowed it down enough that it can be handled with a smaller crew. A lot of the seasonal and contract people (old farts like me) were de-mobilized. I made it home this morning and it sure feels good. I think I'll sleep for about three days...right after I take an hour long shower.

Now I can catch up on several pages of back posts and see what you've all
    been up to.

Now, I'll start working really hard at being semi-retired again. :)

Thanks for all the good wishes.

    Morning all:

Capt.- I thought it may be on the head too, but they said it was the block. It was on a 40hp. mariner, at the front of the motor down below the carb. :notsure:

Bob: Good to hear that the firefighters finally got a break. Time to go from semi retired to retired. It's not too bad! ;)

When's Jim coming back? He's probably out shooting lots of quail.

I know I will need to give up the kitchen and garage for the duration of the project. Right now the plan is to start after the new year with the actual work. This should give us the time to select products and line up the service contractors time.

I last did my kitchen in 1989 so it is time. So much has changed in the last 25 years. Top end features back then are standard features now. I have a meeting with the general contractor on Monday at 10:00. I will be a busy boy this weekend getting a budget together.

If you don't mind me butting in to your remodel conversation, I wanna brag about mine a bit: We were able to take advantage of the buyers market a few years ago, did our remodel and moved in, then the sellers market kicked in for us in selling the old house. Best of both markets and we came out smelling like a rose. These times are crazy, and I know there are as many losers as there are winners, just damn glad my timing was right for once in my life. :D

Nice to read where one of our generation makes out OK. Seems like we are always getting the shaft from all levels of government, but then we are the ones with the money.

    Bite me.

:p J/K, congratulations on the timing. I tried to sell my house in the early 2K's but my wife was adamantly opposed. :(

We are? :yay: Send me my pile please - I'm going to go buy that island!

Seriously, I agree with you, I think. We get blamed for everything that's wrong with the government/business/ethics/society/media; we are pinpointed as the ones who ruined the air and water and contributed 99.997% of all the badness to global warming; we're accused of spending all of the tax dollars on ourselves (even though we are the first and so far only generation to fully contribute to the so-called "entitlement" programs throughout our earning years!); and with all of that, everyone has their hand out expecting us to cosign for their houses and cars or give them a fat check to send their kids to college or take a cruise or save their whales or environments or whatever the flavor of the day is. Poo on the whole lot I say!
    </rant>

Whew. I feel better. Anyone want to join me for a beer?

Yeah, and all that blame comes from our own kids! Then they will fight among themselves for the leavings when we're gone. That's why I plan on spending every dime on me and me and... oh, yeah, on me.

Beer on you? I won't bite you, but I'll drink your beer!

Pull up a chair. Beer is in the cooler on your right. Water and pop is in the cooler on the left.

I need to take a break now. Working on the kitchen budget is wearing me out.
