Thanks Paul for the update. Have a safe journey, and please check back in when you can.

It sounds like the crisis may have passed for Charlie. Now it may be a matter of recovery, and of him adjusting to the changes. That can take a while too, especially for a cantankerous old coot like him. ;) Not beat the 'my dad' horse too much, but he has almost 30 very full, active years between his surgery and today. I wish the same for Charlie.
That's a clean look for sure. We use one of these, not exactly equal but it's handy and does contain the cable clutter:

Congratulations on the successful hunt Rob! Nice rig too.

Our new hot water heater is acting up. :help: It's a tankless gas unit, and apparently they can be tricky to get set up. The plumber is going to take a look today. My suspicion is exhaust venting, possibly combined with water pressure variations (we have a well).

Thanks Dave. Sorry to hear about the water heater. I suspect you're right about the water pressure. We are on city water. I think I remember the plumber who installed ours tweaking it for a while before he was happy with how it was "firing up on demand" ... that would seem the most important part of the concept, no? Ours has worked flawlessly (KNOCK ON WOOD) since it was installed. Hope they get it figured out and adjusted correctly.

The best Mike. I've come to prefer moose over beef ... And you have the benefit of knowing it wasn't pumped up on steroids or whatever they're using to fatten up cattle for slaughter these days. ;)

Interesting---hot dogs, never heard of anyone making them around here. One other item I like is kielbasa, some guys make it but it has to be right. If they have a good recipe, that's another good product to make from deer and can be extremely tasty.
Ring bologna is another option, there's different variations of that too and if made right and lightly smoked it is really really good.
I don't know if ring bologna is available in Alaska, but if you made some I'm sure your friends would volunteer to help you get rid of it! :)

We usually take our caribou to these guys to get hot dogs and polish sausage (kielbasa) made. Randy has been taking some of his game to them for 30+ years. Their old fashioned hot dogs will make you swear off oscar mayer for life. It tastes more like a steak dog, absolutely delicious. Since we didn't get caribou this year, we decided to cut our labor and have someone else do the final processing on this one. Our freezers are in good shape for the other stuff with the two other moose we were party to this fall.

Fixed! (I hope!) We found an electrical connector that had never been connected at the factory. It controls the bypass valve, which draws water from the hydraulic block via the bypass pipe and passes it to the connector T, from whence it goes to the ************* so that the *************** can *************, which we all can plainly see is very important. :p Anyway its connected now.

Murphy's Law event of the day: every time my wife or I took a shower -- every single time -- the water heater started to make a funny noise which would not stop until we power cycled the unit. Plumber comes, plunks down in front of the heater; I go turn on the shower. We wait, wait, and wait some more. No funny sound. Nothing. Nada.

    Dave,

We had a tankless water heater installed when we built our house in 2010. It's on an exterior wall, on propane, and has worked great. I went with a TAKAGI .... better brand than RINNAI (spelling ??). Brand has been around longer and kicks in at a lower flow rate. Installation for the plumbers was uneventful. I'm on a well, but have a storage tank with a booster pump that augments water pressure. Sounds like you may have a problem with water pressure "kicking in" the unit if you're relying solely on the well submersible pump. You also need to verify that the plumber is experienced with tankless water heaters .... a lot are not.

Good luck and let me know how things work out.

    Tex

Congrats on the moose. The winch and trailer looked like it worked to perfection.

Fixed my hot water heater yesterday with no problems.

Thanks Tom. Yep, Randy and I were pleased with how the winch rig turned out. And now it is field tested and approved. :)

Glad you got your water heater sorted out.

Do you have a start date for the kitchen remodel yet?

Still nailing down the actual cost. The cabinets and countertop were close to 3K more than I budgeted. Conversely the cost of the appliances was $800 less. I have a feeling that the cost of the general contractor and tile mason was less than actual as well. I meet with the tile mason tomorrow.

Nothing major or fancy. Just stuff to make it work better for me. Running boards, seat covers, BakFlip
Hi everybody! I haven't been on here much lately. I'm in the process of moving from the Sierras back to the Redwood country and between packing, loading, shlepping, and trying to figure out how many more boxes I can cram into the Tacoma for each load, then drivng 300 miles and doing the whole process in reverse there hasn't been much spare time.

And...I have a question. For the last three or four years, I've been downsizing. Selling off stuff, donating stuff, and throwing stuff away. It's part of the semi-retirement/simplify my life plan. So why do I still have SO MUCH STUFF????!!!!!
I lived in my place at Grass Valley for twenty five years and I think maybe somebody was sneaking in at night and stowing old chainsaw parts, pieces of logging equipment, and waaaaay too many Folgers cans of nuts, bolts, clamps and stuff that I can't even identify. Yeah, that's the answer. Gremlins maybe.
Best to all of you and I wish a Merry Christmas to everyone. If I still have my sanity I'll be back on here after the first of the year.

I hope the books balance out for you with the last two.

Have a Merry Christmas Bob. :)

Hope the rest of your move goes smoothly. My hunting partner and I have been discussing the whole get rid of accumulated stuff and downsizing idea lately. Not sure when to start, but now I'm guessing sooner rather than later. ;) My active duty years kept us kinda trim stuff wise with PCS moves; we've been here 13 yrs now and I'm amazed at how much stuff we've accumulated.
