Boy its hard to believe that your lawn is so dry in Penn. and I am lucky if I can find a dry day to get mine mowed in Va. Just had a down pour come through about an hour ago.
Thanks Susan, I guess it was bound to happen, 12 years on original belt, really can't complain. Just would have been nice if it broke at home, 1 mile from dealer and not after I drove 8 miles away.

I have a crazy yard, the front can be wet and the back dusting like crazy even with the rain we have been getting. Often times, if they are calling for rain, I will mow the front part before it rains, and then can mow the rest at anytime.

so, Friday nite in preparation of Saturday am's fishing trip, I hooked my utility trailer to the Taco (3 grown peeps wont fit in an access cab for any length of time) and parked it down the street. after "The Storm" rolled thru, i went down the street to take the trailer off, and put it on my Jeep. unlocked the door, put the key in the ignition, and a symphony of warning lights started blinking on and off of as my gauge needles sat there and quivered, crank no start. at one point during "The Storm", my son and I were in the living room talking when we had a lightning strike that seemed to be right outside the door, well it was about 40 yards further down the road, it struck my truck. so far the only damage i can see is, a curled end antenna, with the plastic sheathing melted on the antenna, oh and the fried electronics. More to come i'm sure.

Sorry for your issue. No amount of fuse protection saves things sometimes. You could get lucky though.
however a melted antenna is not a good sign .

Holy crap, thought vehicles were able to take lightning strikes like planes do, hope it turns out to be nothing major.
Could have been worse, you could have been in the truck when it hit!
2 1/2 lb. smallie is nice, the Delaware River is known for smallmouths, sometimes almost every fish is around 9 1/8" , but there are 20"+ smallies in there.
We used to catch some really nice smallies, trolling at night for Walleyes at the local lake, but not so much anymore, they sure put up a fight and are fun to catch.

Sorry to hear about that, not good. When I was in High School, lightning hit our TV antenna, I was in the house, maybe 10' from it and saw a partial flash by the wall.
Finally found the answer to a question I had about Social Security, it will not increase if I hold off collecting, since I quit working prior to my retirement date of 2019. So..................., I filed for Social Security last week. Waiting to see when I get a phone call regarding it and what I need to send in.
Still cool here, low 40's still at night, hot the other day, I think it got to the low 80's. Down by the creek that flows thru my property, so nice and cool down there. Love it there.

They must have changed something concerning SS Duane. I stopped working at 49, and it showed the lower figure I would get at 62, and a higher figure if I waited until 65. I opted to take it at 62 so I would at least get some of what I paid in, just in case I would have croaked before I hit 65! I'm still here at 68, but no regrets.
I was always under the impression that the longer you waited to start drawing SS, the more you would get. :notsure:

    They didn't change anything.
If I read his statement right he's not putting in to ss anymore therefore his checks will be lower.
They will never increase his checks. He is only allowed so much so he can get a job but his check will stop once he goes over his limit for the year. It is very confusing but safe to say in my case if I retire early and keep working per say after like 3 or 4 months my checks would stop for the year.. You put that into perspective they ain't paying you shit for all the years of your work. So you need to work years after your retirement date I order for you to even come close to a monthly check. There is only so much money you are going to get. Weather in a short span or long span.
This is how I understand it. I may be so far off base but someone that just retired was talking to me and Said this in a nutshell. Maybe he's wrong but it sounds right. If they can keep you from getting your money they will. They don't have....... Ah never mind. Not going to start on that subject.. BAD MIKE...

    Morning all:
As far as I know, SS goes by your highest consecutive 40 quarters (10 yrs) of earnings.
I will try to use an example of how I understood it to work:
You work at a company that allows you to take a rule of 80 pension (age + # of years), so you could be 50 yrs old with 30 years at the company.
You take your pension from a job that you were earning 80-90k a year, and find a lower paying job to supplement the co. pension until you hit SS age.
You now work as a parts runner for a local auto parts store, making app. 18k a yr. for the next 12 yrs. if you go on SS at 62.
When SS does the math to figure out your monthly benefit, they would use the figures from the ten years in the 80-90k earnings bracket, and those additional 12 years of lower earnings would have no effect as for getting more.
When I got my first SS printout, there were two figures on it, 1st one was for age 62, and the other at age 65. The highest amount (age 65) would be reduced by a percentage based on weather you took it at 62-63 or 64.
The first printout from SS that I got was well lower than what I ended up receiving, due to the added inflation adjustments. Now they are saying there is no inflation, and not giving SS increases yearly like before.
With them changing it to full benefits at 66 or 70, they could have changed other things also, I don't know that, but what I posted above is my understanding of how they determined my monthly benefit.
BTW: I did get an additional $4.00 a month because I was in the service during a specific timeframe! I'LL TAKE IT!!!!
I didn't pay anything into SS from 50-62, like I have stated above they would have gone back to my Beth. Steel earnings and based my monthly SS check on those probably much higher 40 quarters. Again, they may have changed something since then.
I do understand the part about the limited earnings once on SS, that's when a CASH supplement comes into play! ;) Of course I would never do that!

    Hi sixtys/wannabes/Susan.

Duane the dollar figure of your SS payments won't go up anymore since you aren't contributing to SS anymore, but the size of the payment will be bigger if you wait until you are 66 compared to 62 (bigger still if you wait until 70).

Mike I agree some things about SS are screwy. I believe the limitation is on how much you *earn* while you collect SS before they start trimming your payments. Pensions, payments out of 401(k), etc. don't count towards that. The way a lot of people I know deal with that is by working under the table.

Just for the record I'm not a SS wizard. :) I spent some time last year figuring that stuff out for my wife and myself when I was deciding whether or not to cut back to part time. I still don't know if I'll start collecting at 66 or 70 but I know it won't be 62 since that's behind me! My wife is older than me and has been collecting for a couple of years, so that limits our options. But according to some websites I visited there are hundreds of different choices for a husband and wife who are trying to decide how to collect SS. Talk about screwy.

My dad started collecting at 62. He did the math and figured he'd have to live to 86 for him to collect less by starting at 62 vs. 65 (the age was lower then). We just celebrated his 90th birthday so he made it. ;) Plus he had that income for an 3 extra years which in my book is a very valuable -- and often overlooked -- point. Even if the total collected is smaller when you hit your 80's or whatever, you still will have had that income for 3 or 4 years in your 60's, when you had better health and more mobility, and that to my mind is a major incentive to start collecting sooner. I did the math for myself and the 62 vs. 66 crossover point is in my mid 70's, so they've definitely changed their calculations. I guess they have to take into account that we're living longer.

Okay off the soapbox. Have a great day folks! Celebrate something.

Thank you everyone for the info and concern. I retired at 62 1/2, just beyond where it shows the amount I would collect from SS at 62. From my understanding, that figure will not increase if I wait a few years to start collecting at 65 or beyond. On the other hand, if I got another job and held off starting SS, then the amount I'd get will be more of course. I have enough in my IRA, 401(k) and inheritance for ten years of income if it does not grow from what it is worth now. If starting to collect SS later has no benefit, I'd better start now. Hope I'm clear. :) I can always sale my property. I always forget too, my brother and I still have moms place to sell.

I would double check that also Duane, agree with Dave that the longer you wait to sign up, the more you should get.
It should show a full retirement dollar amt. at 65 or 66, and then the reduced amount if you begin taking it before that. Guess they figure they will be paying a higher amount for less time, if you wait to get the full amount!
I think you will be OK no matter what, you may have to plant a bigger garden though! ;)

I'll have to check the above link at the library, my home computer cannot open it. I should have a interview with a SSA rep sometime is my understanding, then they would send me paperwork to fill out and return with any copies of docs they require. I'll ask them about early retirement and starting to collect later if that is affected. Thank you both for the concern. I do have some concern about money if I live beyond my mid 80's.
