I personally don’t have a problem with shop prices. They’re there to make money, so $600 or whatever it was seems reasonable. To me doing it yourself saves money and allows more for possible upgrades. I never priced out Tacoma brake stuff but I’d guess maybe an upgrade could’ve been had, better rotors, pads...but $600 to not worry bout ya brakes doesn’t seem bad either :notsure:

I never understood the whole "it's cheaper for me to pay someone to do it". Do those people consider themselves working 24/7? Where do u draw the line? Do they not have hobbies and quality times w loved ones?

So what is the point of this thread? OP asks what people are paying for brakes, everyone chimes in that they would never pay north of $600 and OP goes off on a rant on how it's chump change for him and he's glad paying an extorted premium. Lol.

It’s an ego booster. Unless you make $600 an hour then no, it’s not worth less than your time. Too many people watching inspirational life videos on beating the 9-5 on YouTube it seems like. Some of the richest people would do their own brakes if they knew how. Some of the richest people are the most frugal and resourceful with their money.

*lose* obviously you don’t work in a field where writing is necessary.

Opie - you got raped on the job, but if you’re happy with it, I’m happy with it. Someone’s got to pay for free coffee.

How does one "lose money" working on their own vehicle if they do it on their free time? Are you working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week? That argument makes zero sense. Even if you're your own boss, you still make time for yourself.

If we're talking about the value of your free time in other respects (time spent with family, relaxing, etc.) then I could understand that, because some things are more valuable than dollar amounts. But saying 'I make so much money that taking the time to work on my own vehicle would cost more than paying someone' sounds like complete BS.

Clearly your tone conveyed you are unimpressed with all the beautiful amenities of Southern California. I simply asked why all your statesmen love to come out here so much then?
I mean I get where you are coming from, az is cool. I spend a lot of time there. love me some cheap gas, and all the golf courses. You have Waffle House...and baristas in bikinis at your coffee establishments. You are right, we can’t beat that.

My wife would probably change my brakes herself for a couple hundred rather than let me go pay a dealer $600 to do it. She’s never done it, but YouTube, a few hand tools and 30 minutes it’s like making $400 per hour, which isn’t poverty in my opinion lol.
