Are you implying that someone who can change brake pads is a lower income individual...

And the truth is, people that have money to pay for $600 brake jobs didn’t get that money by paying people $600 for brake jobs.

Most depressing shit I’ve ever seen was doing some work at a retirement home for what I guess you’d call poor people...absolutely miserable existence.

Y’all have to remember. Drum brakes on your six. Clean and adjust every 10k and give the star wheel a few clicks until you hear drag. Rotors last a lot longer that way.

I wasn't even being facetious. Just genuinely curious. There's always something to learn.

While not my Toyota, my daughter's 03 Bug started making some horrible noises while braking, local Les Schwab quoted me $1070 for all four corners including new pads, rotors and their new/remanufactured calipers. Really not sure why they felt new calipers were needed...

$205 in parts from Napa, and $120 for shop time at Stew's Self Service garage and I'd replaced rotors and pads on all four corners, and did the oil while it was up in the air. I figure in total I saved myself roughly $800 for 2.5 hours of work, and learned how to do something I can use on the truck or my van in the future.

OK, here goes. I work for myself. I can work anytime and any amount of time. The money I make working is larger than the cost to pay for a brake job. So I lose money doing my own work. Not sure I explained that well. Haha. Put it this way, my hourly income is larger than a shop charges hourly for mechanic work.

For the record, I do my own maintenance even though it cost me more, cause I prefer it.

Some people like working on their trucks, some take pride in it, some don't care and just pay whatever bill is handed to them, and some just don't like working on their truck. Not sure why some people don't understand that...
