I’m getting my 50k service done today. Getting oil change, 5 point inspection and alignment

The service person gave me a list of things that needed to be done at 60k which I thought was odd.

Wondering if it’s going to break the bank. Do any of you know how much in dollars is the following:

    drive line service
    Brake flush
    Transmission drain and fill
    Spark plugs

Could probably half those numbers or better just by going to an indie shop.

    Or, DIY.

    Brake flush - $16 ~
    Tranny drain and fill - $30 ~
    Plugs $70 ~

I totally agree Indie shop / DYI route. I let the dealer do one complimentary oil change on my truck, they screwed the filter housing on so tight that I had to use a breaker bar and 3ft cheater to get it off. I swore after that I would never let them touch it again.

if it’s 2018 plus they won’t have anything to do but just inspect the driveline. Earlier models will need greasing.

Before you worry about costs, look in your maintenance manual and see what is actually needed at 60k miles. (Spoiler, it's not all of this)

What’s a driveline service? If it includes draining and refilling the front and rear differentials and transfer case oil good. But if it’s just an inspection of the joints, tightening the bolts, and lubing the zerks it’s a waste of money because there are no zerks on the newer models, and even though retightening all the bolts is a good thing, they should have already been checking and retightening them along with the rest of your chassis like it says in their directions during the other free service intervals because you told them you tow and off-road a lot, right? o_O

Break flush is not necessary if your fluid still looks good. The driveline service is something you could easily do yourself. It is an inspection of your driveshafts, greasing your zerks, And torquing your U-bolts And U-joint bolts. Probably changing your differential fluids and trans case fluid. Inspecting your ball joints, tie rods, and sway bar links. You could easily do the stuff yourself just YouTube it to see what tools you need. There’s no way in hell I would pay a shop to do any of the stuff. And spark plugs are not that difficult. It’s not an easy job, especially if you have big hands. But it’s doable. Just have to take your time and watch a lot of videos on how to do it. Same with the drain and fill on the Trasmission. But I recommend you use the live data on a scanner for trans temp, much easier then deciphering between a bunch of flashing lights and wondering if you are doing it right.

Check out the videos linked in post #1. If you re moderately handy with a wrench, you should be able do some of the maintence yourself.

There are two zerk nipples on each end of the front shaft. Have to take the exhaust heat shield off to get to the back one easier.

It’s always wise to request a detailed list of products and services, and that specific list be printed or emailed for your records. If they scoff at the request, you know you’re probably at the wrong shop. EX. Are the parts genuine Toyota? Sounds silly, but it’s not! Many assume the dealer will use OE parts, but they’re are cost saving corners to be cut.

What specifically is included in a “driveline service”? Later years reduced zerk fittings and replaced with sealed units. So what dafuq are they servicing?

Disagree with the break fluid. May look nice and dandy, but after a while the break fluid gets hydrophilic. Would change every 2 years - at least that is what I do.

As long as it still looks clear and fresh and it’s not gritty between your fingers if you dip your fingers in it and rub them together, then it does not need to be changed.

"looks clear and fresh" "not gritty" - good indicators... I rather trust the science and recommendation by the manufacturer. Just saying...

you were right. I just tested mine with a pen tester and it needs to be changed. I grew up in a family of old school mechanics and that is what I’ve been told. Flushing mine today if everything from Amazon arrives. Thank you!
