60K Service Questions

    Hey guys,
    I pretty much go by the manual regarding service requirements but I have some questions.
    1. I have the iridium plugs. Aren’t they good for 100k miles? Truck runs fine.
    2. Is brake flush a real requirement? It’s not in the manual but I will be getting front brakes and rotors.

    Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
    Only one I can speak to is brake fluid. I recently tested my 4+ year brake fluid and it came out clear and with additive package still working to prevent corrosion.

    Typically advice is every 2 years just to be on the safe side. But in my case, low miles, no hard wheeling and driving through heavy water all the time, my fluid is still fine. I'll continue monitoring it though.

    I did mine at 60.

    I can't justifiably argue towards changing oil on the aggressive-use schedule, yet do every other piece of maintenance on the Sunday-Grandma schedule. In for a penny.

    Did my spark plugs at 85k for the first time. I found one of the plugs was loose and the coil pack was brown. Didn't notice any difference in how the engine ran before and after but it could be a good idea to do it in case you're affected by this. I've read other tacoma owners have also found this when doing their plugs.

    Also did brake fluid around the same mileage though I didn't test it so not sure if it was necessary or not.

    I did mine at 65k miles and they looked fine. Little porcelain deviation but gaps looked good. Probably could go a little farther on them

    I have 2nd gen, so don't know what the manual states for 3rd gen plug change. I suspect it is the same as our 18 RX350 which has the same engine. The plugs are iridium, which can go 100K. However, manual calls for 60K under emissions warranty. What I take that to mean is that the plugs must be changed by 60K for the emission components to be fully warrantied, which I believe is 10 years/100K. After that, you can go to 100K plug changes. Check your owners manual to confirm.

    For those who are used to older Toyotas going 100K or 120K (like 2GR-FE engine), the reason the 2GR-FKS uses 60K is because of the higher cylinder pressures and direct injection. DI engines are harder on plugs. Having said that, I have 82K on mine and just ordered replacements last week. In my experience, you can reliably go 50% beyond what Toyota states with no measurable effect on emissions.
