    DLDR,

Do they really need to be replaced every 75-80k

Went to the alignment shop. Told them I was experiencing some cupping/ uneven wear on the outside of the tires. He said my toe was out really bad and could contribute to this uneven wear.

He said it's also likely the shocks are bad.

So, do my 6112's really need to be replaced? If so, where can I buy just the shocks and not the set with springs?

So your cupping could certainly be driven by bad shocks, but it could also be your alignment. I’ve seen 6112s run till we’ll over 100k, but typical life cycle is about 80k for when they start showing some age.

To answer your question… no, Bilstein will unfortunately not sell just the shocks. At least not to a retail customer. I’m actually mid-workaround to try and get just some naked 6112s myself, but no promises on whether they’ll fulfill it or not. If they do I would be willing to pull a kit apart and send you just the shocks, and I’ll hold the springs.

Interesting. Silly they won't sale the shock by themselves.

Guess I might mover to a more affordable front system. Not going to spend 1k again... Silly

I wonder if the 5100 would work with my springs from the 6112?

That wouldn't be unreasonable. OEM shocks get tired in that same mileage range. Message Bilstein and ask them for a few pointers on how to check for worn or blown shocks, or if the 6112 springs would work on the 5100s. I wouldn't trust the tire shop person's opinion too much yet.

On the positive, it's better than rebuilding them every 15-30k miles for 125 bucks a pop without including shipping or time off the truck.

You might be on to something...here is what their warranty states. It looks like it depends on the "reason" for failure, if in fact it is bad.

With the exception of Products from the Clubsport, Motorsport, EVO S, EVO SE, EVO T1, EVO T2, EVO R, B8 5125/5160/5165/8100/8112/8125/9200/9300 series, the steering gear, standalone B3 coil and B3 leaf spring as well as B8 Control Arm categories, BILSTEIN warrants that Products purchased from a BILSTEIN distributor in NA shall be free from defects in design, material and workmanship for as long as the original purchaser owns the product and it is installed on the original vehicle the product was purchased for.

I have had 2 of the 6112 springs crack, appears to mostly be the corrosion contributing. This was the original 600lb and an Eibach 650lb. I'd guess around 15k mi each time. I am in an area with extreme road salting.
I'd replace the whole unit while going through the trouble. What's a couple hundred bucks more? And you could order them assembled to your desired level. And get new top plate and HW.
Or you'll need a spring compressor that can fit without rubbing the body. SPC has one, a bought the knock off version and works great. My old spring compressor would not fit.

Did you try warrantying them? I had a 650# spring fail after 55K. Bilstein does not stand behind their products... I would look elsewhere for a suspension upgrade.
