Weren't your coolant temps really high last time you went out? That is usually a quick way to cook a head gasket. But it didn't sound like you lost coolant though. No motor really likes high temps. 120k is pretty low mileage on a Toyota truck motor to zoom zoom boom.

 

Yeah, but 35's uphill with all that armor, in the heat of the SoCal sun, it'll get hot. It has never overheated though.

Just saw this on CL, and MAN does that idea sound tempting right now. For that price, there's gotta be a catch.

Why aren't you slapping a 4.0 refurb in it and just calling it a day? I mean it's not some tube chassis race truck and the 4.0 has plenty of power.

Pretty much Toyota's most bulletproof motor right out of the factory. Some models came with a twin turbo system, many have upped the boost dramatically and the engine internals can handle it no problem. Also, there's LOTS of parts and information available on it.

 

Pita to swap in, but fun as hell. You couldn't keep your truck straight on dirt when the boost hits unless 4x4

I seriously doubt it. It's an inline 6 so I'm sure it has a different bell housing and I doubt they make a conversion bell housing.

Don't get me wrong. The 22r/re is extremely reliable and longevity is unmatched. But you can't bolt on a turbo and boost it to 20 psi like a JZ. The 2JZGTE twin turbo was Toyota's response to Nissan's RB26DETT twin turbo in the Skyline R34. They are performance motors that are unmatched in their size and class.
