That's baloney. The demand is simply not there to justify cost of two different transmissions. Otherwise they would offer it to satisfy demand. Alot more soccer moms driving these than hardcore wheelers rowing gears

but that's the thing - they already have the transmission, so how much more could that cost really be?

Can't get an MT in an F1, can't get an MT in a 4runner...

    This timeline blows.

I've been going down the rabbit hole on manual swapping my 4th gen 4Runner with the 2UZ V8. Think I have what I need zeroed in on.

Dunno how much but it's not nothing. Same reason they are switching everything over to tnga platform,. It's all about creating efficiencies and streamlining production. That matters to their bottom line.

BS. Toyota offered the FJ with manual and Ford makes the Bronco with a 7MT. Toyota just being cheap.

That was 10 years ago (FJ). Toyota offers far fewer manuals today than they did back then. The 4Runner lost its manual 24 years ago. If it made a comeback it would be a miracle.

I hope for that miracle, but it’s extremely unlikely.

not sure I would classify this as less reliability. Reliability would indicate reduced mean time between failure. Do we have mtbf metrics between naturally aspirated and turbos? Regardless of parts numbers, mtbf is the true metric for reliability.

as someone who isn’t ever going to keep a car for 10+ years, I’ll say the new turbo in my 24 winds out nicely and is wayyyyyy more peppy a drive than either of my third gens or even my 4Runner. Also, I’m averaging north of 23mpg.

Changeovers incur huge costs between downtime and tooling changes. Mfg want less changeovers

Cruise the highway at 65 or 70mph, and then floor it. The 3rd gen Tacoma will take off like a cut cat, and it comes alive in the top end, but the new Tacoma is kind of anemic up there. This highway speed scenario is the only condition I've found that the 2.4 Turbo loses to the 3.5, but it is a minor annoyance to me.

The low and midrange torque of the new truck is wonderful, and hot rodding around town in a Tacoma is something I never got to experience, because my 3rd gen was a turd when taking off or city driving. If I lived on the highway though I'd be longing for my 3rd gen's top end pull.

Mods are currently being changed .....

I’d imagine a tune can help fix that though.

Late to this dumpster fire, but does anyone else see a regular cab Tacoma hiding in this new 4runner design. I mean cover up that rear door handle, and give it a bed. You got a regular cab Tacoma! Anyone else??

I can’t say that I’ve noticed any highway driving issues, I’ll have to experiment in my way to work next week :D

It looks like a scaled down Sequoia, which is a SUV version of the Tundra which inspired the Tacoma which turned into the new 4Runner

This is one of the negatives to the turbo 4cyl, goes like hell up until ~80 then it falls off. Even tuned smaller cars will run out of steam around 100 to 120ish.
