Was poking around the www and stumbled upon the 6th gen hilux. Found out it was based on the 1st gen tacoma. Wondering about parts interchangeability. Namely the bed. Ibe always like the rolled beds of the European/japanese versions. Thought it would look cool on my tacoma. If swap is possible, where could i get one? Probably be pretty expensive to import it in? Thoughts?

Central or South America might be an interesting drive home .

i bet it would be cheaper to fabricate a bed then import one

Having never seen one in person who knows what would interchange

I know that at least in non-NA markets (NZ, AUS) that while the Hilux shared similar components, the body style was very different. So you'd have to be pretty confident that the bed was going to be a close fit to importing to make sense...

You know, the 83 and down pick ups came with those rails. Find an old truck bed that's rusted out or smashed up and use the rail for the conversion. It would take some body work but it could be done.

The body lines look pretty similar. Although the gas cap is on the other side

It would need to meet the tier 4 EPA standards and other federal standards the cost to convert over plus the import cost would render it pretty much not very cost effective .

Now if you have an unlimited budget many things are possible

With enough cash you can accomplish anything. Too bad that kinda cash isn't just laying around growing on trees.

I do like those style of beds, would love to see how they look on a 1st gen Taco.

Once a vehicle is 25 years old it can be imported without dealing with emissions or safety certifications. So that would include the early years of the 6G hilux. However you'd still be on the hook for the import tax (chicken tax) of 25%. Importing just the bed you could avoid that.

This video shows the removal of the bed on a 6th gen RHD Hilux. Seeing the bed mounts might give you some idea of if a swap would be possible. You'd probably want to find a LHD version, looks like the gas tank and exhaust system are swapped on the RHD models.

I forgot about the 25 year issue never really exploring importing a vehicle

I've spent too much time looking at 79 series Landcruisers. Love the utilitarian look, probably the only truck at this point I would consider getting rid of my Taco for. This is the post-2007 facelift version, so I'd have to wait til 2032 to import one of these.

Frame width is different. I bought an Ironman front bumper for Hilux as an experiment and ended up building my own mount.

I thought those bed walls were a single piece of steel. I remember on my 1982 Toyota "Truck" you could take your index finger and push on the side of the bed and make it pop in and out. Anything sliding around in the bed would knock a dent in it.

You have to wait 25 years then it can be imported as a classic. They are out there you just need to have the patience and the money. Another option is the Hilux Surf which is the 4 runner. They are more readily available and usually are between $13-18k
