It is somewhat surprising how little regulation/oversight there is in towing trailers. I always thought once you were over like 24k or something you needed a CDL? Technically, couldn't you go buy yourself one of those 1ton dually trucks that can tow like 35,000 pounds, and then go pick up a nice 20,000 pound 5th wheel and one is going to say anything or ask if you know what you're doing

Many states require a NON CDL Class A license for pulling anything over 16k gross (combined weight truck and towed load) others it’s higher. Some not at all.

26000lb+ is usually the CDL requirement

Then there is the whole weighted tag for road use tax
Basic tag weight limit (4000lb) a Tacoma is on fringe of max weight and over weight with driver.

To legally tow a lawn mower or even have one in the bed I need a weighted tag. (8000lb) anything more and I could get pulled and fined. I could buy a higher weight, but I’ll likely never need. And it’s not required for RV type trailers.
My 4Runner I could legally pull up to 26k and nothing would be said. (Would never happen)

It’s the state to state regs that make things weird
