Fair point; however by "tension" I mean extreme tension, where you're doing something like placing the weight of the vehicle you're winching out against it.

A good knot will only reduce the safe working strength of a rope by 50%; poor knots, as much as 90%, depending on the material. A proper splice can reduce the strength by as little as 10-15%.

Figure 8 and Bowline are about 75%-80% of the line strength. There are other knots that are stronger (approaching 90%) but they aren’t as easy to untie.

I wonder how one of these would perform on a steel shackle instead of the soft one.

The steel would start to chew up/gouge the aluminum almost immediately. It'll "work" but would definitely shorten the ring's life span.

I think it would also start to unscrew the pin if the pin was the rotation point, I don't think the non-pin side could be put in the hole. Either way, it's not how they were meant to be used.

    4.75" outer diameter.

First run in blue only. Is there a color you would prefer over blue?

Red might be nice. I already have one of your original bare Al ones (still haven't even used it yet..)

I didn't go red from the local anodizer because it is more of a maroon, and it has a tank change fee because it is so rarely run.
They offer Green, Blue, and Black standard. Orange and yellow are also available for a tank change fee.

I have used mine several times, which is one of the original bare aluminum ones. I just added a blue one to the recovery kit from this batch.

assuming i use it to come back to the truck, not just change direction to a solid anchor, do these rings turn as the winch line passes over it, or does it stay stationary?

It rotates slightly but the synthetic line can also slide over the ring without harming it or burning the line due to the slow speeds when winching under load.

Ring spins while winch line passes over it.

That's cool and all, but I would NEVER step over a winch line under load.

Nor would I. That wasn't under a load. Literally less tension per line than if you were pulling it by hand with a single line.
