So I was checking out the info here:
    http://home.4x4wire.com/erik/diffs/#rear

And from what I can tell the rear end from a 00-06 Tundra is the same as my 1st gen 6 lug Tacoma. Does this mean that I could swap the 3rd member from the Tundra into my Tacoma?

Also, does anyone have an idea of what a used 8.4" 3rd would cost? It wouldn't need to be in mint condition because the plan would be to weld the thing together anyways.

    Thanks

Yes, they are swapable. The only possible issue might be the bolt pattern on the flange. It might not be exactly the same as on the drive-shaft flange. If you have 4wd, the gears would have to match to the front.

Ok, good to know. Gearing won't be an issue since the 3rd would be swapped into a 4x2. What would one do about the flange issue...?

Not an expert here, but I mentioned it because it COULD be an issue, but it may not be. Need to do some more research.

I'm pretty sure that if the bolt pattern didn't match (I think its a 60mm x 60mm square pattern), you could swap the flange from your old differential.

Why are you wanting to swap in a new one anyway?

Right. Never really thought about it being an issue.

I'm looking into temporarily swapping in a welded 3rd.

In that case, you wouldn't want to swap over the flange (aka yoke).
Some aftermarket companies sell yokes with multiple patterns pre-drilled. If the pattern didn't match, that would be a better choice.
