They should have just put a Dana 60 in it so we would not need to worry about it breaking and being overloaded so easy.....

Just a heads up since it's a rear diff thread. Well just changed my rear diff fluid, and as suspected I was low. About half a quart low, maybe even more. Replaced with redline 75w85 synthetic. I can already feel the truck shifts smoother. I have the off-road so my diff takes 4 qts. Which it took exactly that before fluid started to trickle out. WTF Toyota

    Mostly stuff I built.
The 8.75" diff is the same diff that the Hilux has come equipped with for the past several years. The locker is similar to an Eaton electronic locker just a electromagnet that pulls the side gears into a locked position. There is defiantly a difference in the gear size from the 8" & 8.4" when compared to the 8.75". I have had hands on both of them...
Oh man The fun things you get to play with when you work over seas for a decade and your wife is from a country where they still market the real Toyotas.

So, do you know if the actuator is the same as the old problematic 8" e-locker actuator, or is this a different/superior design?

It's not similar in any way.

Old thread, but it’s a relative question.

What are the differences in the housings between the 8.0 and the 8.75?

Just think, .5 quart of fluid × 20,000 trucks sold per month....... That's a lot $$$$$$$$$ saved.

What exactly is bigger about it? You said there are 2 additional bolts I assume that attach the 3rd member in to the housing?

What are you trying to do ? Identify what you have or trying to debate the difference between the two. What’s up ? Everything’s bigger on the 8.7 versus the 8.0. ring gear diameter is bigger , the pinion diameter is bigger , the carriers bigger, the housing has to be bigger to fit it , third member carriers bigger , the bolts holding in the carrier are larger and there’s more of them.

I’m not here to debate anything. Really just wanted to know if there was a difference in housing sizes. You answered my question. It’s literally nothing deeper than that. Lol.

I’m building a diff skid for a third gen a buddy of mine owns. I own a 2nd gen. Now I know I can’t mock it up using my truck and I’ll need an 8.75 rear end to work with.
