where did i say anybody works for free?

our numbers seem to line up pretty close. labor can vary, that is true. a local shop in my area typically prices the diffs at 80 - 90 each, however when going in for a service such as above they generally are kind enough to do a tire rotation at no charge, that's why i say a bit high at 500.

as for the plugs it's not a race car, it doesn't need the most expensive plugs out there, further to that the plugs should have a longer life than 30k should they not.

Dealerships charge more than independent, both charge more than DIY. He who has the least overhead generally charges the least.

If you want a dealer serviced car you'll pay for it, if you can't/don't want to pay for it then go to a local mechanic, or do it yourself if you can and want to. $800 is a lot, but for what I've paid in the past with similar service to a 4x4, the dealer price is accurate for the work in my experience.

My dealer here in NJ was about the same for the services. So I printed a coupon for oil change/tire rotation off the Toyota owners website, had them do that for about $40, and did the filters and plugs on my own, Unless you have spent the last 30K miles towing the max weight all day every day, or rock crawling all day every day, there's no way the diff oil needs to be changed. Look in your owners manual, it's just recommended, not required. It was also recommend at 15K, and I guarantee that they didn't do it when it was on Toyota's dime. If you want the work done... well 90/hr is pretty standard. You're gonna pay for whatever the job bills for.

But that's a lot of money for a whole lot of stupid simple shit so either learn to help yourself, shell out the money, or go find somewhere or someone cheaper.

My 30,00 cost $240 without the plugs. I'm 6 speed and I think that makes a difference. $800 is too high IMO. Around 4 - 500 sounds about right. Go to another dealer, and run your plugs to 60k. My service manager told me to go to 60k on them, but I had already changed them.

LOL. Well, then, about $1.98 each for replacement coppers. Nothing wrong with those, I run them in my other V6 AWD. Replacing them at 30000 is a good idea, they don't last as long as platinum or iridium. If you do the work yourself, then the cheaper plugs are fine. If you don't, and if our V6 runs well on the more expensive plugs (does it?? IDK, it's my first time with the Taco), then you might want to switch so that you don't have to pay the labor as often.

Still, $800 seems like a lot even from the dealer. They are always more expensive, although they are usually more convenient. If you can't or don't want to do normal maintenance yourself, you're best off finding a local mechanic with a good rep and lower rates. They are out there, it's that "convenience" part that you are giving up to find and work with them.

dealerships always end up being the bad guy in these equations.....until no one else can fix them.

800 seems a bit high but if they are also including a transmission service in the 4x4 service than it sounds about right.

Wait.... you have to maintain these things? I was told to just put gas & oil and drive it to 300K trouble free miles. I feel I was bait and switched.

Funny...I was just looking through my maintenance records. I was charged $232 for my 30K service. I did supply my own oil ($30) & Gear Oil ($60) for Diffs & TCase. I paid $99 for 3 oil changes & tire rotations....so that's really $33 for filter & labor.

    Replace Spark Plugs - $123
Labor for Diff & TCase fluid $89
    Disposal Fees - $20

    Total Cost - $232 + $123 = $356

That's crazy. North Park is my dealer and has done right by me. Bought 2 Tacos at invoice with good trade in value. But my service guy Gilbert always took care of me, even giving me a loaner for the day 100k mile service, changing belt and trany flush which I wanted the dealer to do. But he's now working elsewhere. I'm not mechanically inclined, all I've done is change my oil and headlights, simple stuff. All the differential oils, spark plugs etc, I buy the parts and go to our family mechanic in Piedras Negras Mexico 2 hours south where my mom and grandma live. He just changed my break pads and plugs at 150k miles for $200 pesos($15) and he asked for less. Piedras is a safe border unlike Reynosa and Laredo, no war. So if that's an option for you, it will save a lot of $. Or get a friend who's mechanically inclined to help you.
