This is on north base? I go out there to fish pretty often by Browns Beach and also go down to the boat house quite a bit. It’s a fun place to explore.

Yes, a little excavation area on South New Mexico Ave. Not much challenge there, but if you want to get dirty....

Sounds like a good plan...let's watch the weather.

Your truck is way more capable than mine at this point. I am completely stock, except for the removal on the TRD stickers, and a complete novice at offroading in a 4 wheeled vehicle.

There are a couple of challenging places relatively close by that I would like to try.
One of them is Rock Front Ranch (35.114775, -120.098152), which is off HWY166 and about 1 hour from Lompoc/VAFB.
The second place is Ballinger Canyon (34.883937, -119.443699), which is also off HWY166/33 and about 1.5-2.0 hours from Lompoc/VAFB.

The rains probably have changed things a bit at both places. With the rains coming this week and next, the trails will be pretty slippery for several days after it ends. The dirt out there gets 'greasy', almost like ice, when it is very wet.

I have extensively ridden them both with dirt bikes and camped at Ballinger Canyon countless times, over the past 20 years. I do know the trails pretty well and was out camping/riding Ballinger in February and it looked OK.
My last trip to Rock Front Ranch was a couple of years ago, so things may be quite different out there.

Ballinger Canyon's location is fairly equal distances away for us coastal (805) TW people from Ventura to Arroyo Grande. Seems like a good spot for a (805) TW meet in the near future.

    Ballinger Canyon 4WD trails are 7, 9, 17, 24, 36, 40, 41 and 46.
24 is the main trail, fairly wide, some sand and may have flowing water. 40 starts off with a climb from 24, and a sand wash after its intersection with 36.
At one time, you could take 40 or 46 out to HWY33, that may still be available. 17 has some switchbacks.

The Ballinger Canyon map dimensions below are about 3.5 x 4 miles.

Has anyone camped at Barrel Springs in the LPNF? We were going to go to Big Sur, but the group thinks it's too rainy. Santa Maria should have a bit lighter rain.

I have camped there several times in the distant past. It is a nice spot.
We have not been able to get to Barrel Springs via Colson Canyon for about 10 years now. It is closed to vehicle traffic from the Colson Canyon side. The gate is locked at the top of Rattlesnake Canyon. But, I am not sure if it is closed from the Miranda Pine side. Anyone know?

Yeah, nvm, the FS website says it's closed. Same with Rock Front OHV for the weekend rain. Looks like we're going up Fig Mtn!

Yes, it is a sad situation that gets my blood boiling every time I think about the closure.

Fig. Mtn. will probably have the gate shut where the dirt road goes to the summit. May want to call the FS on that one.

Try Ballinger....I would consider meeting you out there on Sat. or Sun. for some easier stuff.

We're just going camping, not wheelin'. Heading to Fig Mtn Campground or Nira Campground.

Not 4x4, but I'm picking up a new camping trailer and hitting the hills this afternoon! Rain be damned!

Montana De Oro is always a good place to fish for cabs and bass from the beach. Bottom fishing opened up also if you want to get on a charter boat.

First major build pieces arrived today. Too bad I will have to wait until next weekend to install them.
