Cruise by will be fun. I'll have plenty extra poles booze and food.

So I was driving to Santa Maria today and saw a singe cab 2nd or 3rd gen Silver Taco coming down a trail right by the riverbed. I was on the freeway. Is that an open trail? If so, how to access?
When I was younger we used to run all around that riverbed. Ive only been up that mountain once. I didn't realize that driving path was even there until today. Looks like fun!

Not legal to go in the riverbed. I think it's a 200 dollar ticket depending on where they catch you.

Its fun for sure. If you're looking for a legal alternative piru creek trail is fun. Ive done it several times. Might be going in a few weeks since the d13 hunting season is open.

Not to put shade on something you support Chris, but, I’m not a fan of this decision. Opening that area up to the general public is going to dull the experience of being able to be up there. Not only that but, it’ll expose a pretty well protected area to being at the mercy of anyone who wishes to frequent those spots. And unfortunately, not everyone will respect and continue to preserve that stretch of coastline as it has been for many years. More people = more litter, more complications, & a bigger human footprint.

That's very true, and comes with anything opening up to the public. From my interactions just from today there seems to be people excited like me or not, like you. The people I've talked to that are not happy about it are all people that know someone that lives there and has access to it already. That's really not fair in my opinion and is quite selfish (obviously not calling you that :) ) I know people that have lived in the area their entire live, have surfed their entire life, and have never been up there.

I hear you...and I’m by no means trying to rain on your sunny day. I’d actually like to surf up there with you one day. I just feel that a large part of the experience of surfing & being up there is the fact that it’s difficult to get to and there are not crowds on most occasions. Gaviota on up to Bixby’s Ranch is literally the last stretch of Southern California coastline that has been kept almost completely in its natural state. There’s very little human footprint for such a pristine coastline offering great surf breaks. Most people who are not financially vested in a parcel up there have had to work hard to find a way to surf those special spots. I’ve lived in this area close to 20 years and can recall almost every time I’ve surfed up that way. Less than 10 times and each time I was super excited and very grateful. If someone is local and has lived in SB/Goleta their entire life and has never surfed there...I personally feel that they have not taken the time to fully explore all their options. It requires effort and planning to do it right. You just can’t drive up, park, suite up and paddle out. I’m happy to discuss my stories & methods with you off the forums. Which reminds me, we need to go surfing together again! It’s been too long :)

I agree, not fair in my opinion either.

There are thousands of acres of public land that is surrounded by private property in CA. Most with no public access available. These 'islands' of public land can only be accessed by the private land owners who reside on the borders of these public parcels. So, the private land owners, their family and friends, basically have the only access to these public land parcels.

Not sure the correct way to remedy these situations.

I'm glad its being made public. I'm all for a small human footprint however no one group should be able to enjoy coastline by themselves. Im sure with usage fees there will be proper maintenance on the new areas. @10 bucks a day all those coastal parks are making plenty of money to keep it clean.
