extremely long story short... sort of

i was on a backpacking trip this weekend. we parked my truck at the end of the trail then drove back to the beginning where we started. a wildfire broke out back in lockwood valley in the ozena region where my truck was parked.

on saturday night my buddy an i were literally in the middle of cooking dinner, getting drunk and hanging out when we smelled smoke. i walked over to the clearing, looked up and saw a huge cloud of smoke coming up the canyon. ash started to fall on us, we could see the redish glow in the smoke near the ground. the wind was blowing directly towards us. i ran up the trail about .25 miles to the crest to look down the canyon and it was very obvious the fire was coming towards us.

i decided right then that we needed to GTFO of that canyon. we left the majority of our gear at camp. just brought water bladders, water pump filter, little bit of cold weather gear, and batteries for our headlamps. we had no choice but to back track all the way back to the car where we started. we were the only 2 people back there, didn't see any sign of other people the whole 2 days we were back there.

left camp at 7 PM, made it back to the car at 3 AM. covered 14 miles in that time. that morning we had done 7 miles to where we were camped where we saw the fire. we encountered a large animal during the night. saw the glowing eyes and silhouette... didn't get to see what it was, but i knew it was fucking big and not scared of us. followed us for a bit... i had my sidearm in my hand for like an hour after that.

i can barely walk, my feet are torn to shit, legs all chewed up from brush. fire is only 30% contained back there, so getting my truck out of there was a bitch. roads are closed, lots of fire crews back there. had to get a police and fire fighter escort to take us back to camp schedeck where my truck was parked.

all in all, over the 2 days we were back there we hiked well over 22 miles

once my buddy emails me the pics i'll post them up for you guys
