mind if i ask where you bought your gears? im needing 4.88s as well

 

Just bought them from poly

 

Get a complete 3rd w/ ARB locker from ECGS if you can. Would really complete your truck

i was thinking that or the Detroit. but hey, i dont have another 1000 to drop since i already dropped and extra chunk of change on some other goodies

Detroit is a good choice too, was just thinking of the more street able/DD application.

4:88 gears, just go Nitro, and you shouldn't have a problem with them.

Any reputable shop should be able to install them (even some garage guys).

Cheaper option would be to remove the third and bring it to a shop with the gears in hand then it shouldn't be expensive at all to have them swapped

 

yeah im still up in the air about detriot or arb. i got quoted about 700 for everyting installed at the shop including the gears. i might bring the third in one weekend to American gear here in SLO and have them do it. everyone around town that i called referred him. ill go with that option if this other garage guy cant do it.

we'll see though. i still have to worry about getting the truck back first

anyone have a stock OR 05+ tacoma rim laying around they'd want to get rid of cheap?

 

700 isn't bad, $200 gears, $50-100 install parts/kit, $400 in labour.

Should be able to get all the parts for around $250 gears & install kit.

And Now is the time to get the diff done since the truck isn't moving anyways

 

yeah just my buddy went to the exact same place and got his detriot in as well for only 700 so i was surprised he said 700 just for the gears but its different for each 3rd member i guess.

i bet ill end up taking it apart some thrusday night, dropping it off at American Gear friday then off the my track meet i go and i when i come back its all done! have a nice install saturday and then out to pismo i goooooooooooooooo

I've thought & found it nesscary to break in new gears, not so much for the gears but for new bearings. Does it make a huge difference no, but I just like the side of caution when it comes to certain things

well maybe not straight to pismo then haha. driving a week to school and what not will be enough to "break in" the bearings?

 

i do, but going to run a tire gate and dont want the ugly rim, was thinking about painting the OR rim like i used to have.
