I grew up in Goleta, lived here for 40+ years (since I was six). Haskell's beach was a local surf hangout and kind of a "locals only" beach. Bacara moved in and as part of the agreement for the build made a small parking lot and beach access to Haskell's, so it is no longer the quiet beach that you walk a trail to get to. Also, the type of people that the Bacara attracts are mostly rich snobby folk driving high-HIGH end cars and snubbing the locals. There are exceptions of course.
Honestly, as a person that has lived here so long, I am more worried about the sudden explosion of new developments going on. Everywhere you look where there used to be a vacant lot, they are now cramming in as many homes into as small a location as possible. It is also REQUIRED that if they are building these multi-unit developments that they have to have a certain number of "affordable" (read low income) units. Goleta is well on it's way to becoming the next Irvine or Orange County. The developers are getting rich and in my opinion someone on the city council is getting their pockets lined. Traffic is getting much worse, and the place is not the "small town" suburb of Santa Barbara that it used to be.
Also, Goleta has long since been Santa Barbara's dumping ground. You would never see a Costco or a K-Mart go in the city of Santa Barbara, so before Goleta became a city they just approved the things they wanted but didn't want in SB for build in Goleta.
Sorry for the rant, just a lot of crap going on in a place that used to be pretty nice.
    Ken

I just read about that in the LA Times. Looks like it's going to be a shit show! I bet the drives in and out are going to be fun!

That pretty much sums up how everyone in Goleta feels right now! I've lived here 13 years and still the locals hate me. haha

same shits goin on here in SLO.. i remember all the cool spots i used to go as a kid mountain biking an what not, now its all filled with homes and other stupid buildings. My one real big concern is homeless... literally in the last 3 years the population has almost tripled. Its ridiculous though. Its getting to the point you dont feel safe walking downtown at night since theyre literally sitting on every bench heckling people for money. If you dont give them any, theyll cuss you out without one regret. Its something i really started to notice when i started working downtown.

It seems most "small" towns go through this shit. I grew up in moorpark between t.o. and simi and it was small with tons on open land. We rode Mtn bikes and dirt bikes everywhere, offroaded through al the hills and washes...Now when I go back I trip cuz the fucking place is crazy nuts with development, custom gates housing tracks, three golf courses and shit load of stores and restaurants. I sound like an old guy, I'm gonna go yell off my porch at the next youngster I see lol.

It's kind of the progression of small towns here is SoCal especially ones with desire able locations. I feel your pain though.

Ken & Timmy explained it very nicely. They(those who intend to build) are slowly trying to take a beautiful and minimally developed area and transform it into a mico Orange County. The fact that they are actually allowed and are developing as much as they are in Goleta(especially the Ellwood area) is infuriating. Next it's the Gaviota Coastline.....The last stretch of undeveloped coastline in southern California. So many people have worked very hard and gone great lengths to preserve that beautiful stretch of land. The problem is, the ones who are pushing for development are just not seeing the importance of preservation and apprear to be boundaryless. They just don't see that a line had already been drawn. I just don't get it....I mean, when is it enough?
I'm just super opinionated on these particular subjects and have a hard time just stating facts and not getting fired up about it. If you lived up here and embraced this area for what it had/has to offer...you'd understand.

I was going to buy a used pair and have Icon fix them up but, I think I'll just call up Wheelers and bite the bullet. That means I'll have to get Leafs as well. I'm not too sure how much life I have left in the leaf pack I have. Just not wanting to spend grips...

I can understand all the feelings you guys have about the bacara. Sucks to hear what it was and what it has become.
I'm going to go check out right now.
Corey, I live in Moorpark and I moved there from the SFV and was relieved at how undeveloped the area is...I guess it was much calmer when you were there.
My apologies for supporting the local shit show.

Same thing is going on here. They used to only be a couple of crazies wandering around Goleta but now the homless are invading all the local shopping strips where there used to never be any.

I decided to go with the 3 leaf hd. Don't want the 2.75" lift that dakars give.

The entire Costco marketplace used to be an open field, bum habitat, with a little league field. People would go mudding there , I remember once my dad pulled some guys out of a deep pit with his 88 landcruiser and they brought him a 12 pack and pack of underwear the next day as a thank you.

Well put Theo. The thing that pisses me off is that I have NO clue what to do to stop it. Years ago when Goleta first became a city, I showed up at a city council meeting to voice my displeasure at the proposed building of a development across the street from Sandpiper Golf Course. They wanted to cram 150 or so units into a small pie-wedge shaped piece of land. I spoke out against it but the developer (and their attorneys) literally bussed people in from LA and surrounding areas stating that they "deserved" to live here. They were paid to speak, given food, and bussed to and from the meeting. These developers and their attorneys know no shame. In the words of my father in-law "there is a special place in hell for developers". Anyway, they voted NOT to allow the development to proceed at that time. Well, within the last few years something changed and that same piece of land now has units for sale and they are continuing to build. I did not attend the council meeting but did send a lengthy letter stating my case that was supposed to have been read at the meeting. It is really an outrage.
Another thing is that there are PLENTY of run down buildings and neighborhoods desperately in need of improvement. These people holding public office take pride in passing worthless laws and allowing building to run rampant, why not try getting the crappy unused buildings refurbished or torn down and redeveloped instead of breaking new ground on untouched land? It just amazes me. I wish we could get some honest, long term residents on the council. That is how it was for the first couple of years. Bummer.

Weird, I probably saw you a couple times. I drove through the Embaracadero neighborhood every morning and usually more than once a day for the last two summers. Was in the work truck though, (little white colorado)

Well, I guess wifey and I weren't meant to stay at the bacara. We're at Goleta cottage hospital now...probably kidney stones for the little lady. Happy Valentine's everyone!

Lol nah man no apologies. It's an amazing lil city, it was bound to happen as the gold course came so did the rich custom homes then the test is history. Mp was literally a one signal town forever. The mountain meadows area didn't exist, the brige to "new" high school wasn't there. Place a lil farm country town. Dudes rode dirt bikes, quads n 3wheelers to school...even random tractors lol.

The stretch of coastline from gaviota up is amazing and should be preserved!!! Jalama more north is such a remote beautiful campground, hard to find coast like that now!
